WinchesterVHit By Fire,Loss Greatf:WINCHESTER (API - Two fires broke out within 10 minutes early today near the heart of downtown Winchester, causing damage which fire inspector William Gochenour said* mayexceed $1 million.Three buildings were destroyed and two others heavily damaged.The first fire broke out at 1:20 a.m. at Virginia Aerosol Inc. and spread to the adjoining E.W. Armstrong Co., a storm window firm. As firemen arrived on the scene they spottedthe second blaze a half blockaway.This one began at the George W. Closer Transfer Co. and soon reached* Patton’s Furniture Co, and Patton’s Moving and Slorage, adjoining buildings located behind the Closwer structure.The two Patton buildings were heavily damaged and the three others were total losses.No injuries were reported.Gochenour said arson is suspected. He said the fire was the ! worst he could recall in the history of the city.At 10 a.m. the fires were still smouldering and many among the some 200 firemen who fought the blazes were still on the scene.Eighteen fire companies some from nearby West Virginia, battled the blazes.All of the businesses except Virginia Aerosol were housed in two-story buildings. The Aerosol firm is located at 441 N. Cameron.- Next door is the Armstrong company, separated by a driveway.Patton’s Furniture and Patton’s Moving and Storage, a half block away, are located at 423 and 425 N. Cameron, respectively. Tne Clowser firm, at 21 Clark St., is set behind the moving and storage building.V*v
