The Curt Carter 5-4 comeback win the Kern County League title game Wednesday night at Sam Lynn Park has been disallowed on a protest by Floyd’s Stores, and Floyd s has been declared the 1974 KCL Champions.in a difficult decision, league commissioner Joe Davis ruled in favor of the Floyd’s protest of the reinsertion intothe Collegian lineup of designated-hitter Keith Frazier inthe ninth inning after Frazier had been removed for a pinch-runner in the eighth frame (Frazier drove in the tying run in the Curt Carter three-run winning rally in the bottom of the-extra-inning-ninth).The KCL plavs under professional baseball rules, andin the case of the DH, under American League by-laws,but the County league also features the high school free substitution rule which allows each starter to return tothe lineup in his original spot in the batting order once after being removed. However, high school ball does not use the DH and Davis judged the professional rule takes precedence over the high school rule.“There was a grey line — a technicality here, andafter lengthv discussions with both coaches and a study of the rules, I upheld the Floyd's protest and both sides agreed not to continue the contest from the point of the protest, said Davis.“These two well-balanced clubs played enthusiastic and exciting ball ail season, particularly in head-to-headcompetition, and both are deserving champions.”
