Well Known Citizen of Keokuk Struckby Lightning.SIKeokuk, la., Aug. —Charles L. Carpenter, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of this community, was struck by lightning am: instantly killed in a small field at his farm home near Sandusky last evening at 5:30 o'clock. .Mr. Carpenter, a %N short time previous to being struck by lightning, had gone to the field to ^ i gather muskmelons, and was in the (j melon patch at the time he was struck. h i lie was seen to fall, and assistance was soon at his side. Me was carried to the house, and lor some time it was impossible to tell whether he was dead or alive. The lightning had struck him in the head, and an examination by a physician showed that death had been instantaneous.n:tlcitcclla
