She was bom in Fort Fairfield, Maine to parentsthis locale she received her education and with unusual adeptness began teaching at the age of 19. A call to the West led the Eastman family through travels first landing |n Minnesota where MissEastman instructed pupils. The family did not tarry longhere and several years later moved west Ward to the windswept Dakotas. The journey was made by Prairie• •s. ■.Schooner covered wagon with the youthful teacher holding the reins. In a small community near Bismarck thetask of teaching became the lot of Annie Eastman. The lure of the west still beckoned Miss Eastman and an invitation from an aunt in California led her to another teaching post. In 1888 the family moved to Hammond atwhich place Miss Eastman joined them and began a long life of dedicated service in the: ipublic schools.The public schools were poorly equipped and from her meager salary Miss Eastman purchased supplies and supplementary books for her pupils in a two-room school building. Teachers Were notappointed in this era but had to gain pupils throughRetitions going from house to ouse for family signatures.
