Record crowds eat 25onsMontrose melonMONTROSE - All attendance records were shattered at the 21st annual Montrose Watermelon Festival Thursday. Friday and Saturday with more than 4,000 attending Saturday night.The crowds consumed 27 tons of watermelon and 475 pounds of hamburger.Quaan crownedCrowned as Queen was Tonya Adkins. 16 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Adkins of Montrose with Janet Clark, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Clark Sr. of Montrose first runner-up and Barbara Wardlow, 15, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wardlow of Montrose second runner-up.Talont contestWinners of the talent contest Saturday and $75, were: First place, Duane Waider, six years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Waider of Fort Madison whose drum playing was sensational; second and $50, Kimberly Wilkerson of Fort Madison, acrobatic dance and third with $25, the Fascinettes of Fort Madison.Russell Philp of New Boston won the pony mare and colt.In the float parade, Mersch-man Feed and Seed of West Point was first, West Point Community club second and the Loney Sisters, dressed as a bear and a cat third.The crowds Friday and Saturday evenings were thrilled by the performance of three sky divers, John Snyder, MountSterling, Iowa, with the U. S.Army at Beloxi, Miss., MartySchlumberger, Freemont, Neb., a senior at Parsons college at Fairfield and John Kunzman, a junior at Texas AM.Bickle injuredOne of the sky divers scheduled to make the jumps, Dean Bickle of Keokuk, had to cancel o 't after he was injured in a jump Friday afternoon at Ottumwa.Bickle was practicing for the jumps at Montrose and also for the sky diving competition scheduled for Saturday night at Ottumwa when he was injured, after a safe landing. When he hit the ground, a gust of wind billowed his chute and he was dragged across a nearby railroad track, breaking his right arm near the shoulder.
