Renken today denied that firemen were forced to contribute 3 per cent of their salary to keep their jobs.Renken testified at the 40th District Court inquiry into alleged compulsory contributions to the Independent Club by police and firemen.Three former firemen yesterday testified they gave Renken % pc cent of their wage for the inde-pendenl Club, a dominant political group here. They said they had the understanding that if they didn t they would lose their jobs.“I have never forced anyone to contribute,” Renken testified.Hi said there were several fir-men who still are working and who never have contributed to the club.The former firemen were Pedro Salinas, Jose Morletf and Alfredo Duarte.Salmas aid he understood the money was fo*- the Independent Club, a long-dominant political force here. ‘No one forced me to pay, but I knew I would automatically get fired if I didn’t.” he said.Salmas said he was fired fromshe fire department in J94« after ht tried to bring about an election which would allow the use ol civil service in the fire department.Morlett said Chief Ranken told him ‘ these were political jobs and we had to cooperate with the Independent Club, Naturally, he said, those w*ho didn't cooperate knew what would happen ”None of the testimony was directed at last Saturday’s runoff election.IndiaFarmJudge R.
