He wouldn’t pick up the game seriously again until 1936 when he started bowling two or three games before league matches and 15 to 20 games for himself on Saturday nights. But there was much more to this character nicknamed “Indian Ted” than his bowling career. As a young man, Eliason’s skills as a woodsman and trapper became increasingly refined. He was known to cover between 20 to 26 miles a day on his extensive trap lines. In interviews, he recalled carrying as much as 180 pounds of beaver for five miles through waist-deep snow. In instance such as this, he avoided the use of snow shoes because he felt he would break through them.In 1928, Ted suffered serious injury to a knee while he was on a trap line with his brother. Hewas climbing over some windfall when he slipped and fell and severely injured the ligaments in one of his kneecaps. He crawled the better part of a mile to his trapping camp where he spent several days nursing this injury and later walked outFor me, most of Mr. Cox’s previous publications have been not only excellent research tools, but also valuableinstructional aids.Violence on the Range was tied to a variety of other social problems which enhanced its frequency. The mcyority of the homicides described in this book were directly alcohol-related and this legacy remains with us into the present. When teaching the “History of the Gogebic Range” this fall, I’ll find Mr. Cox’s book a valuable reference when covering area social problems of the past.“Gogebic County Homicides: 1885-1920” is for sale at Iron-wood’s Depot Park Museum, the Wakefield Chamber of Commerce building, and Mother Nature’s finest, also of Wakefield.with the aid of a cane. This injury never fully healed and plagued him the rest of his life, whichmade his ultimate accomplishments that much more remarkable.Eliason worked locally in a number of mines, the Plymouth Open Pit, in particular. It was here that he was employed as astorm, thus he descended from Anvil on cross country skis to carry out this task. How much he salvaged for his employers was never really added up, but to Ted it was all part of the job.By the beginning of 1940, Ted Eliason’s reputation as a bowler really began to take off and he became widely known for his daring as well as his skill. In time,he became known as the “one man team” due to his ability to beat five-man teams single-handedly.Editor's note: Peterson is a historian with wide interests in Gogebic Range history. His next article will continue to chronicle the life of Ted Eliason.NOTICE TO AREA LANDOWNERSThe Gogebic-Iron Wastewater Authority is seeking to augment it’s biosolids land application program with the development of additional application sites. Biosolids are a nutrient-rich low odor organic product which when properly recycled to the land, has proven to be safe and highly beneficial.Presently, all lands which biosolids are recycled upon musthave pre-approval according to either the State of Michigan or Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource’s stringent permitstandards.Priority will be given to potential sites with the following characteristics:He felt the company was making good money thus he felt entitled to the same.He was promptly threatenedwith termination and sent home but was ultimately called back and given what he had requested. It seems that stubborness was definitely an Eliason personality trait, but he knew he was worthy of his demands. And he knew that managementknew it.Ted was extremely conscientious about his job and the following examples prove this out.
