Following is a capsule report of the early Academy’s endeavorst Seven years after the founding of the Catholic Church in Moberly in 1670, Hie first Sisters arrived in Moberly to begin their apostolic labor. Thcv wereSister M. Philipps, Sister M. Thomas, Sister M. Ann, Sister M. Ann Matilda, Sister M. Clement and Sister M. Ann Simeon. .'Sister Mary Philipps designated the superior.In 1B77, the Sisters of Loretto came to Moberly from Kentucky at the request of Father McKenna. One month after their arrival ip September, 1877, the first Catholic school in Randolph County was begun. The school, known as St. Mary’s Academy, housed the eight grades and four years of high school. Later in its history, St. Mary’s became Loretto Academy.In 1881, Sister Mary de Saleslerarr.c superior and under her administration the first part of the brick building, which stands today on the northwest corner of (he intersection of Ault and Farrar streets, was erected. The original frame building was moved hack* rn the lot and was kept for living quarters.The Sisters of Loretto pioneered in tcachingiu Moberly for 77 years. The first four-year high school in Moberly was established by the Sisters of Loretto and continued until 1923. The building is now owned by the Christian College of the Bible, thus continuing its role in education and religion.
