R, have issued oil address to the cok.red people of the city culling their attention to the fact that they have decided to hold uu annual emancipation day celebration.In this address they say there la a strong tendency among their people to drift away from the facta of history, and Instead of celebrating their own independence to celebrate the liberation uf the West India slaves.After calling attention to this tendency the address continuer.;** Believing thus, we desire to establish a permanent day for the celebration ot the emancipation of American slaves, Which was a result of Chiton and sacrifices of hundreds of thousands of American citizen a upon American solU We have decided upon September 22 of each year, the day which Lincoln issued hi* first proclamation uu the subject emancipation, as lh«? day upon which to a*k our people and our chilUreu to come together n» do honor Co the name and memory of Lincoln, Grant and the hundred* of thousands of other American heroes who laid their lives and their all upon their country's altar in the uuine of American freedom.“We therefore appeal to every true American in this city and county to aid as in making U»i» celebration to ul* wu.it the fourth of July U to our white fellow ciliz^ua.• There will necessarily be some ex-pen*es attached to this celebration. We, therefore, ask each of you to contribute to the proper committee at the proper time money or provisions, be it ever so much ur Utile, according as you feel able to give. Our object U to first teach patriotism to our people and our posterity, and second to increase the small fund in our treasury for the benefit or dependent old soldier*, their widows and orphans.•Our first cel ?bntion will take place In this citv at City park.
