18 Fryburg Residents Visit Freiburg, GermanyFRYBURG - Eighteen Fryburg residents have returned home from a Bicentennial tour of the native land of families who came to this area from Germany in the 1820s.Fryburg derives its name from Freiburg, Germany, and the Clarion County community still retains much of its Germanheritage.' Dr. G. H. Grueninger, retired head of the German department at Depauw University in Greencastle, Ind., andoriginally of Freiburg, Germany, arranged the land tour for the group. Sally Hartle of Marble arranged the group’s flight to Europe.Hartle had worked on a history of Fryburg’s St. Michael Parish which included a genealogy of congregation members and was published two years ago.‘‘Interest in a trip to Germany was stirred up by the history,” she said.Through correspondence with Dr. Grueninger, who had noticed the similarity between Fryburg and his native Freiburg in an Indiana post office, St. Michael Parish received an invitation in July, 1975, from the mayor of Freiburg to visit the mother city.Hartle noted that, ‘‘This was the first serious thinking about a group trip to Germany—and the Bicentennial year seemedthe perfect time to go.”The tourists were guests at a reception in city hall when they arrived in Freiburg.They presented two photographs of St. Michael Church in Fryburg to the city along with a map of the Fryburg community, made by Ruth Rapp, one of the group The Fryburg residents attended mass in the Cathedral of Our Dear Lady in Freiburg, built over a period of four centuries and completed in 1513.St. Michael Church in Fryburg built in the 1880s is a small replica of the Gothic cathedral.Rev. John Rosenhamer, who previously served at St Michael as a resident assistant, was celebrant of the mass. Robert Ditz, a great-great-grandson of one of the first families of Fryburg, was server.Rev. Rosenhamer said recently, “Everybody was glad to have us and a sister city in the U.S.”The visitors toured the cathedral and were received by Archbishop Schaufele of Freiburg, head of the Diocese of Baden-Wurrtemburg.They presented to him a parchment signed by members of St. Michael Church Thev also attended festival celebrations in the Black Forest, were luncheon guests ofthe mayor of Hugstetten, and attended a reception.Several of the visitors were able to locate and call on relatives.The tour covered other points in Germany.Plans are under way to have a delegation from Freiburg visit Fryburg in the spring of 1977.Schedule ListedTIONESTA - The following routes have been scheduled for routine maintenance in Forest County for this week.— Filling and sealing cracks and broken pavement along Route 99 at Redclyffe.— Shaping unpaved shoulders and adding material where needed with a grader along LR 27010 at Newmansville; LR 511 at Neiltown; and along Route 66 south of Marienville.— Repairing and replacing signs along various routes throughout the county.Orion H.
