THORNTON.A Man Whose Life Was Part of.State History.iI )r George T 'rhornton well known in this city and on the coast, j flier! of paralysis on the I Sth inst. in this city at his home, 1935 Clay streetI)r Thornton had been identifier! with the welfare of the Pacific Coast fora quarter of the century Arriv-; ing lu re from Green County, Ala., in 1869, he purchaser! the Forbes Ranch in Alameda County, conducting it 111 a systematic manner Seeing the possibilities of a growing community around him, he organized with other capitalists the Newark Land and Trans portation Company, which afterward merged into the present Southern Pacific Railway He then took charge as manager of the Redding Ranch in Shasta County, owned by Lloyd Tevis, and was successful in placing those rich lands 111 the hands of the early settlersIn the 70’s he accepted the position as manager of the large landed possessions of Messrs Carr Hnggin in Kern County, converting those sandy plains into beautiful and prolific farms He next entered | into tlu livestock business, selecting Arizona as the field of action Near Henson, Prescott and Williams he, owned and controller! immense herds and was regarded as one of the best experts on land and livestock in that section of the counry. He was a graduate of the New Orleans Medical College and also graduated with high honors from the Alabama State University at Tuscaloosa During the late civil strife hr- entered the Confederate army and served as surgeon and soldier with distinction Dr. Thornton was the brother-in-law of Colonel Harry I Thornton, the attorney of this city, and brother-in-law of Dr K U Perrin, the Fresno real-estate owner He leaves a widow and three sons and one daughter to mourn his loss -Call.
