Father Clancy Marks 76th Year as PriestJERSEYVILLE - Another milestone in his long and fruitful life, was reached on Aug. 15 by the Rev. Father John J. Clancy, that day marking the 76th anniversary of his ordination into the priesthood. He was 101 years of age in June.Father Clancy is residing at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Alton where he went following a hip fracture some time ago.Father Clancy, a native of Ireland, set an all-time record last year when he celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving on the occasion of his Diamond Jubilee as a Priest. He came to Jersey-ville from the hospital to read the Mass in St. Francis Xavier’s Church where he served as pastor for 52 years. This was the first time in the history of the Catholic Church in America that a priest has been physically able to offer Mass on the occasion of his Diamond Jubilee.Father Clancy was ordained on the Feast of the Assension of the Blessed Virgin Mary August 15, 1891, at St. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Alton.The Mass of Thanksgiving on his Diamond Jubilee was attended by Dignitaries, both religious and civic, of many faiths, as well as members of the congregation and relatives.
