MS, EditorTHE TALMADGE POETISESMr. and Mrs, Talmadge B. Portis Jr. with their three lovely daughters, Cathy Diane, Angela Violet, and Lise Rose, have moved to Jackson, their new home. Portis has had headquarters there in the State Employment service for the past year.Mrs. Portis’ teaching experiences before coming to Oak Park in 1958, were with W. 0. Robinson in Andalusia, Ala., Tuskegee Institute, Tuskegee, Ala.; Jackson State Summer School, Meridian; all in the field of English. She will leave another vacancy at Oak Park and in the Laurel community, after nineyears of service.She was chairman of the school’s English department; a member of and head of the music department of the St. Elmo Baptist Church: a member of the S. G. Wilson Circle; compiler of the first Oak Park year book; and piano instructor of a private class. Mrs. Portis, daughter of Mrs. Hattie V. J. Mclnnis, is well-known for her beautiful singing, in college, graduate school and the community.She is an Oak Park alumni; did her undergraduate work at Jackson State and Tougaloo College, singing first soprano in both schools’ choirs. She leceiv-ed a bachelor of arts degree from Tougaloo College in English; and the master of arts in English from Fisk University, Nashville, Tenn.While at Fisk she had the leading singing role in the opera for the annual Festival of Arts. Mrs. Portis did special study at Atlanta University, Atlanta. Ga., and the NDEA Institute of English, Rust College, Holly Springs. She will begin work Aug. 28 as English instructor at the Brinkley High School in Jackson.There is always a touch of sadness when Laurel loses good citizens, even though they receive added advantages in the change.Mrs. Portis wanted her many friends and co-workers to know that they have a special place in her heart, and will be remembered with pleasure.HOLLOWAY CIRCLEThe Holloway Circle No. 2 of the Morning Star Baptist Church met in the home of Mrs. Mary Terrell on Jackson St. Monday evening at 5:30 o'clock.The devotional service was given by Mrs. Katie Fluker; Moments of Meditation read by Mrs. Wilma Moffett. The Bible teacher, Mrs. L. E. Pierce, brought a wonderful lesson to the members “Now is the Time.” At the close of the meeting the guest, the Rev. L. E. Pierce made encouraging remarks to the group.The next meeting will be held in the home of Mrs. John Washington on Maple St. Monday evening, Aug. 21, at 5:30 o’clock.GRAND CHAPTERThe Bathsheba Grand Chapter O.E.S.P.H.A. jurisdiction of Mississippi met in Jackson, July 24-26 with Mrs. Mable 0. Lott, Grand Matron and Coleman M. Varnado, Grand Patron, presiding. The session opened with enrollment and Youth Fraternity meeting, which were very inspiring.Winners of the oratorical contest were: 1st place — Miss Ber-nell Jones, Vicksburg; 2nd place — Miss Patricia A. Lewis, Mon-ticello; 3rd place — Miss Catherine C. Otis, Hattiesburg; 4th place winners: Mary Alice Harris, Gulfport; Sandra Minor, Woodville; Linda Joyce Williams, Vicksburg; Devoridst Curry, By-halia; and Linda Vern Ward, Edwards. Topic delivered by contestants was “Working Together for World Understanding.” Judges were Mrs. Minnie M. Jones,R. Henter and Prof. Stanful.On Tuesday the business session and the appointing of committees were held, also addresses were made by Grand Matron Ix)tt and Grand Master Gilliam.
