GSU chooses conference, workshop bossRoger Paris has been named director of the Office of Conferences and Workshop at Governors State University, University Park.The Park Forest resident has been a staff member in the office the past six years serving as continuing education coordinator.GSU’s Office of Conferences and Workshops was established in 1983 to organize special programs on campus that benefit students, faculty,staff, community residents, and business and industry leaders.A recent project is the satellite videoconferences that allow Governors State program participants to exchange ideas via satellite with speakers in other areas of the country.Other projects include: credit workshops on nursing, social work, physics and alcoholism and substance abuse that help students and professionals keep up with changes in the field; employee training programs that have Governors State faculty instructing company staffers in classes and workshops; and special programs, such as two recent programs on U.S. and Soviet relationsParis has won several awards for his work in the Office of Conferences and Workshops.This year, he was presented with the Franson Award for Creative and Innovative Programming from National Universities Continuing Association for his work on the 1988 U.S. and Soviet relations conference, “Kicking the Cold War Habit.”He was also recognized by the association in 1987 for his work in developing and presenting a conference for teachers featuring speaker Madeline Hunter, and for a promotional piece he did for another conference.Paris has been instrumental in expanding Governors State’s role in developing workshops for other agencies, according to university officials.In the last year, the Office of Conferences and Workshops has developed programs for American Association of University Administrators, Midwest Association of Student Employment Advisors and Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.For each conferences the office is responsible for contracting with speakers, developing a program and handling registration and all budget functions.Paris said he would like to continue the office's current efforts and expand the department’s business and industry training programs.The Park Forest resident earned his bachelor’s degree from University of Illinois-Chicago and his mas-Itjr’c Honrao frnm finVPrnnrSRoger Paris
