Becomes Family AffairMeek’s Pastry was founded by Francis Meek, father of the present owner, Max Meek, in 1933 and was located originally in the old bank building at the corner of Clinton and Second Sts. across from the courthouse. In 1937 the business was sold to Ray Kinder who moved the bakery to its present location at 315 Clinton. It was sold again in 1945 to a Mr. Disbrore who operated it until 1949, when Max Meek bought it. He installed all new equipment, except for the ovens. The bakery was enlarged to include the building next door. An addition was constructed at the rear of the building so that the space has been doubled. He says that their new equipment enables them to produce twice as much with half the staff needed before.Mr. and Mrs. Meek have eight children and all of them, except the youngest have worked in the bakery. Max Jr. is in the service now, and Janie is too young. However, Kathy, Tim Carol, Pat, Jim and Bill are working there now.The girls and Mrs. Meek do the decorating.
