Orioles Close in on 3 Club Field MorksPass 60 in Flawless Games, Threaten League Fielding Record Held by ClevelandBy JESSE A. LINTHICUM .BALTIMORE, Md.Good and bad news hit the Baltimore Orioles during the week as Billy Loes, Brooklyn Dodger castoff, won his eleventh game of the season and pitched himself into consideration as thecomeback of 1957 in the American League. In accounting for hisBilly LmitcssIyrs»nskdilyedaeleventh triumph, Billy scored a shutout over the Athletics. Five of his . triumphs have been at the expense of the A’s.Loes helped the Birds sweep the four-game series with the Athletics and once again challenges for a first-division berth in the standing. . The victories came at an opportune time. The Birds had fallen into a run famine. They failed to score in 32 consecutive innings before Kansas City came to town. There was a rash of bad news hitting the camp. Billy Goodman, idled by a broken finger, was ordered to the sidelines; the prized rookie, Brooks Robinson, third sacker, was hit in the head by a ball pitched by Ned Gar-., vcr, and hospitalized for a few days, and Bob Hale, the.Oriole sensation of 1955, was told to turn in his uniform. He was sold to Vancouver of the Pacific Coast League, on Oriole affiliate.Robinson's Helmet SplitRobinson spent one night in the hospital, where it was learned he suffered no fracture, although his plastic helmet was split. He returned the next night to watch the Birds play, but returned to the hospital immediately ’ alter the contest. Doctors .finally released him, although the youngster was ordered to take it easy for o few days.Hale developed into somewhat of a problem child. Manager Paul Richard# was at his wit’s end as to what to do with him. Hale has a keen eye, but liis value to the club stopped . right there. He is listed as a first’ baseman, but his fielding and throwing left a lot to be desired. Richards used him sparingly in the field.Hale skyrocketed irom Class B ranks to hit .357 for half a season two years ago. Richards discovered him while playing an exhibition game with the York, Pa., farm team, and decided to call him up for a trial. Bob was sensational as a pinch-hitter,.but he wasn’t so hot defensively. He will be given a trial in the outfield at Vancouver, a position at which Hale began his professional ^areer before being shifted to first base. Appearing in 42 games this season, 40 of them as a pinch-hit ter, Hale posted a .250 average. Last season he batted only .237 and was farmed out late in the season to Montreal.Pappns Off Disabled List With Bob Boyd, leading hitter of the Birds, having his greatest season at first base, Hale had little opportunity to play. It became necessary for Richards to cut a man after receiving word that Milton Pappas, 18-year-old rookie, must be taken off the disabled list. Pappas was placed on the list when doctors ordered him to • take as little exercise as possible because of a shoulder ailment. However, Pappas had been used as a batting practice pitcher, and when Frick learned that he was used for that purpose, it was suggested that he be_ placed on the active list. Thus the hurried departure of Hale. Richards indicated that he has not given up on Hale, who may be repurchased, at the end of the season.TJidre was some good news gleaned rom the American League averages over the week-end.
