Oregon trail is being markedSCOTTSBLUFP, Neb. UP). Marking of the Oregon trail in this area got under way when an Oregon cedar post sent by the Oregon Train Centennial commission was placed at Fort Mitchell by Boy Scouts. An honor guard from the Scottsbluff air base fired a salute.Merrill Mattes, Scottsbluff national moument custodian, said the fort’s “name is perpetuated by Mitchell, the prosperous farm land of Mitchell valley and Mitchell pass, and the Oregon trail gateway thru Scottsbluff monument.” The fort, established in 1864, was named after Brig. Gen. Robert B. Mitchell, comamnder of the military district of Nebraska.Saturday a marker will be placed at the site of the late William H, Jackson’s camp in Mitchell pass.
