Minister and Wife Near End of 2500-Mile Horseback RideKANSAS CITY, Aug. 13 OP) —A retired minister and his wife, today were riding horseback on the last 20-mile Jap of their 2.500-mile trek from Portland, Ore., to Independence. Ivlo., over the Oregon Trail.The Rev. John W. Beard. 65, and Mrs. Beard, 62,' tethered their horses in a pasture and spent last night in a tourist camp eight miles west of Kansas City, Kas.They plan to camp tonight near Independence, and ride into town tomorrow as guests of the Cliamber of Commerce.With their mounts, Black Dynamite and Black Diamond: and a third horse used to transport their equipment, they left their home at Portland April 1.Yesterday, after riding 35miles from Lawrence, Kas.. the Beards admitted being tired, but added:. \ -We’re not nervous like those making long trips by ■ motorcar.'The.. trip was undertaken in conjunction with the annual convention of the Oregon Trails Association, which opens in Portland todayBeard retired a year ago from the pastorship of the Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church in Portland. Several years ago he made a canoe voyage along the route of the Lewis and Clark Expedition..
