Design Alaska celebrating its 50th year of businessBy ERIC UDJIelidji@newsminer. comDesign Alaska started as a small engineering firm built by two young Alaskans.Today, the company is a full* service operation with surveyors, architects and engineers covering a variety of specialties.The company began in 1957 asa partnership between civil engineer Bob Gray and land surveyor l^es Rogers, who met working at the Alaska Architectural and Engineering Co. The business moved to its College Road location in 1960.Gray and Rogers started associations with various architects around town and gradually gained architectural experience. A decade into their partnership, the team tackled its largest project, designing the siteand landscape for Alaskaland, now Pioneer Park, and selecting the historic cabins that line the park’s Gold Rush Town.The firm changed ownershipin 1973 and soon began ridingthe wave of projects that followedconstruction of the trans-Alaska oil pipeline. Jack Wilbur, the current president, started at Design Alaska as a mechanical engineer-in-training in 1975.He said the company facedsome difficult years during thelate 1980s, when economic downturns around the state forced Design Alaska to reduce it work force and salaries.Wilbur became president in 1996, and the firm has grown significantly over the past decade Not only has Design Alaska increased its revenue and net-Please see DESIGN.
