Outlaws One GameFrom Berth In FinalPeace River Stampeders were sitting on the brink of elimination from the Wheat Belt BaseballLeague playoffs following a double loss to Fairview Outlaws lastSunday.The Fairview club, clubbing the ball around the park like it was golf ball, clobbered the Stampeders 18-3 at Fairview in an afternoon tilt and then squeaked by Peace River 1-0 at Twelve Foot Stadium in an evening contest.The triumphs gave the Outlaws a 2-1 lead in games in thebest-of-five semi-final, peaceRiver won the series opener here last Wednesday 7-6.The two clubs were to meet in the fourth game of the series last night at Fairview. A Fairview win would advance the club against the winner of the Grande Prairie Eskimos-sexsmith Rainier series, who split a twin bill Sunday.Commissioner Spud Steinki ordered the playoffs to go ahead last week even though all the league games were not completed.“Tourr ments are ruining the league and could ruin baseball in this area,” said Steinke.He blared all the teams in the league as the real reason for the late post-season play.“They just want to play ball... only at tournaments where they think they can pick up some pin money,” he said.Steinke said Peace River was the only learn that fully co-operated in that, they completed all but one of their games but offered to meet Sexsmith even to the estent of playing at Fairview to wind up their schedule. The game was a home game for the Stampeders.A tournament slated for Father last weekend was called off. It is not known if Falher will try and organize it again this season.Curve ball artist Jim Fox tossed two hit ball handcuffing the Stampeders all the way to gain the1*0 win. He had seven strikeouts and the best the losers could muster was advancing a runner to third base twice in the game. Mel watchorn, second baseman, hammered a Kenny Gall pitch over the Heart River into the parking lot scoring Dale Fleming, who had singled, ahead of him.The losers capitalized on the homer again in the seventh to knot the score 4-4 this time Fleming poking one over centre field fence more than 350 feet away. Losing pitcher Jim Fox came home in front of him.The Stampeders moved ahead one run in the bottom of the seventh.
