South Man Street in50 Years AgoCenterPicture and story by courtesy of Ord CurtisSaturday was a great day in the lives of early settlers of this community, as that was the day of the week when father would hitch up the team to the old spring-board, get all members of the family aboard and start out early in the morning for Buffalo Center, where they would buy the necessary groceries to last them another week, and greet old friends and to make acquaintance of the new arrivals to this fast growing town. The trip .to town and back required a long day and mother saw to it that there was plenty of sandwiches, etc., taken along to feed them. The above picture was a very special occasion in the lives of the early settlers of Buffalo Center as the news had made the rounds that a photographer would be on hand that date and take a picture of the city. The photographer was standing at the south end of main street when the pic- •ture was taken and you will note how they lined up their horses and rigs on both sides of the street, in order to make a better picture. The buildings shown on the left hand side of the pidture are still standing, but fire destroyed most of the buildings on the east side.Ord Curtis said: “After looking at the abovepicture, you can well see why it was necessaryto have a blacksmith shop in Buffalo Center.•The site where Buffalo Center now stands belonged to Howard Pomeroy at one time. He sold it to a group of enterprising young men who forsaw the future of a thriving town.A plat was then made and lots sold, and it wasn’t long before the town of Buffalo Center came into being.
