EXERCISES SUCCESSFULMany Attend Annua! Emancipation Day Program in LawrenceLast Week- - -Emancipation Day exercises by the colored f people of Lawrence with many visitors from Topeka and other nearby cities closed Saturday night with a big dance in spite of the unfavorable weather, according to George R. King. A Topeka orchestra supplied the rou-sic. •A good string quartet from thepenitentiary at Lansing brought out a large crowd Friday evening. The string quartet members also proved themselves to be proficient singers.Prof. J. P. King of Kansas City, Kans.,- gave an inspirational address. This was followed by a dance with music by a local orchestra.Saturday afternoon the south-side and northside colored baseball teams met to decide the respective merits of their sections of the city. The southside won. The Lawernce band supplied the music.William Hughes and Mr. King, who had charge of the affair said this morning that they wished to express appreciation for the cooperation of local business men.The same committee will have charge of the celebration next year and they plan to make it a more elaborate affair, according to Mr. King.
