Mr., Mrs. William 0. Gilpin observe 25th anniversaryCUMBERLAND - Mr. and Mrs. William 0. Gilpin, Ridgewood Avenue, Cumberland^ were honored with a surprise 25th wedding anniversary celebration recently at the Pinto Mennonite Church social hall. It was given by their daughters and sons-in-law.The couple was married July 17, 1967 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Cumberland, by the Rev. LaVern D. Rasmussen. Their attendants were Mrs. Mary Lou Duby Socia, Tucson, Ariz., and Robert L. Gilpin, brother of Mr. Gilpin, Cumberland.Mrs. Gilpin, the former Louise Lathrum Strait, is the daughter of Mrs. Olive Broaarup Lathrum, a resident of the Cumberland Nursing Home, and the late R. Kirk Lathrum. She is executive secretary of the Tri-State Community Concert Association and a member of the Fort Hill Associates. Mr. Gilpin is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Okey W. Gilpin. He retired from the Chessie System in 1983 after 41 years of service. Both are members of St. John’s Lutheran Church where Mr. Gilpin is a member and president of the sanctuary choir and a charter member of the bowling league.Mr. and Mrs. Gilpin have three daughters, Mrs. Jan Strait Dobbins, Gassaway, W.Va.: Mrs. Kim Strait Helmick, Pinto; and Kristi Gilpin, Cumberland. They also have three grandchildren, Brian Dobbins and Scott and Eric Helmick.The couple received a phone call from Robert Socia and his wife. Mr. Socia is a cousin of Mrs. Gilpin.A banner was placed outside the hall. The fireplace was decorated with a white lacefans, made by Mrs. Helmick, with miniature bouquets of orchid, white and pink silk flowers and candles in crystal holders. A program booklet was at each place setting. The head table was centered with a wicker basket of pink, orchid, silver and white silk flowers and double crystal candleholders.Seated with the family members were Mr. and Mrs. Norman White, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Smucker, Mrs. Esther Sweeney, Mrs. Maxine Hudson and surprise guest Mrs. Blanche Lathrum Spiker, 89-year-old aunt of Mrs. Gilpin, from Pompano Beach, Fla.The four-tiered pedestal cake, baked by Mrs. Shelby Gable, was topped with a 'silver 25th emblem and orchid flowers. The four side cakes were heart-shaped and encircled with orchid and white miniature roses and greenery.Mrs. Gilpin was presented with an orchid and silver silk flower corsage accented with baby’s breath. Mr. Gilpin received a white silk rose boutonniere.The Rev. Mark Dill, pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church, ve the invocation. Mrs. Paula al prepared the food assisted by Sonya Flint who also served the punch. Mrs. Seal served the cake assisted by Mrs. Lou Broome. The program opened with Miss Gilpin welcoming friends and relatives. Several selections were sung by Mrs. Dobbins, Kim and Kurt Helmick, son-in-law, and Miss Gilpin. Scott and Eric Helmick and Brian Dobbins recited poetry. Mrs. Dobbins and Miss Gilpin presented a flute duet. A slide presentation was shownpnfitlpd “Thmuah tho Yparlt;; ”
