Oldest Man in Pike County.The following item sent out from Arthur last week concerns the oldest man living in Pike county: Tuesday, July 16th, was celebrated the 95th birthday of Alfred Dayton, the oldest man in the county and the oldest minister in the state. He was born July 16th, 181*2, the year that the second war with great Brittain was declared. He was born at Waterford, Connecticut; living there until he was six years old, when,his father moved to Marrietta, Ohio, one of the most historical cities of the central states, and lived thereabout a year, and then moved to New Albany, this state, and where he grew to manhood; became a teacher, ship carpenter and builder. He united with the church in 1832, was was ordained as a minister in 1838, and has preached the gospel for sixty years. In 1836 he was married to Martha Cochran of New Albany, November 1st, by Rev. John Vaughn, and to which twelve children were born; six now living. His wife died Jnue ITtb, 1884, at the age of 64 years. He now has 27 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren living.Some of the notable features of the day were nine persons over seventy years of age, six over sixty years old. Persons in attendance from outside of the countv, were his daughter, Mrs. Eliza Pepper of Springfield, Mo.; E. E. Dayton of Cumback, Ind. A barrel of ice water and a barrel of lemonade were consumed during the day by the 125 people who were there. Music was rendered by the Mt. Zion singing class, after which a short talk was given by the one who the dinner was given for, at the conclusion of which a hearty hand shake was given.
