The Kiwanis Club of Aiken on Friday night received its charter at what was one of the most brilliant affairs of its kind ever held in Aiken, By thi§ official act the local club i:dually le - lt;ttu |t iKi wants Club and is admitted into the great national organization which Includes itOre than 1,000 clubs through ou the United States and Canada £nd which has more than 81,000 members, a splendid record for this Order which has only been organ iz ed about eight years ^The charter function, which was held in the banquet roorn of theHotel Aiken was marked withbeauty, wit, humor and laughter,and music and speeches, with many guests present with their wives or sweethearts or other friends from the Kiw'ania Clubs of Columbiaand Augusta, The tables were niceif decorated and delicious eours es consisting of fried chicken, salad, olives, pickles arid ice cream and cake were served and music and songs enjoyed during the eating period.Rev. Philip J. McLean, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiated as toastmaster, which he did in good style, keeping the tables in an uproar through his witty remarks.The address of welcome was made by Mr, C. Lee Gowan, County Agent, which was responded to by the Rev. Zaeh Ford Bond, of Augusta. The presentation of the charter wag made by Mr. Joseph L Bowles, Jr., of Columbia, S. C., whc made the presntation speech In place of Alva M, Lurnpkln, Cover nor of the Carolinas Kiwanis Dis trict, who was unable to be present Mr. Bowles made a masterly ad dress anti defined Kiwanlsm, its Ideals and ambitions in glowing terms. He stated that the Klwanis Club was a membership of each re presentatlve of different business men of Aiken and that being a member of this club taught them to know one another better and en able them to work for the good of their city. ‘ Too many of the mer chants of any city,” Mr. Bowie? said are not understood. Theyseem cold and unapproachable butas a rule when you get to know the other fellow, you will find that he in not such a bad person afterall. Gyles, Esq., District Trustee, who la in the absence of Mr. Frank P. Henderson acting President of the Kiwanis Club, accepted thsr Charter in a splendid adson and Laird made an instant hit and were encored time and again.Other speakers of the evening were Messrs. Thomas Pierce and l)r Q^jHtlebaum. Both made good inspiring talks which were greatly enjoyed.During the banquetting Mrs. Fdress In it he outlined the plans E. Ardrey sang two or three beau-for the Kiwanis Club of Aiken for the future and talked of the good work that was going to be done by the club.Another good speech was that made by Mr. Pressley, president of the Kiw'anis Club of Columbia. Mr Pressley spoke earnestly and to the pdint about Kiwanlsm and its aims.A few musical selections fromtiful little melodies which were warmly applauded The one most enjoyed by the Kiwanians and their guests was a little melody entitled A little bit of HoneyAt the end of the meeting the party broke up after singing one verse of The ^tar Spangled Banner which was sung by everyone standing facing a beautiful United States flag.Hahn, H.
