Congratulations to ‘Mrs. Esther Alter who passed her 85th birth- 1 day anniversary, April 8. I believe 1 she is our oldest citizen in South ; Otselic and she lives with her son, ' Sherman, in the Cox block and al present Mrs. 'Bernice Carkley of jMRS. ESTHER ALTER! VanDyke, Mich., is her companion j and housekeeper. Until recently ;he was able to keep house for her son and has lived here about ieven years.She was born near Ft. Plain in 1870, her two brothers, the Rev. Elmer J. Yerden, a former pastor of the Methodist Church here and Adelbert, a farmer, have since died. She was born on a farm when times were hard and men worked for 50c a day as hired hands. Mrs. Alter’s mother, died, leaving Esther with heavy responsibilities and plenty of hard work for a girl of nine years. Ed- | ucational advantages in the country schools of that day were limited. However, there were certain virtues not to be found in oui modern systems. At the age oi 16 she was married to Emery Alter and they engaged in farming. Four sons and a daughter were born. Sherman Alter, now manager of the Victory Store in South Otselic; Fred Alter, a retired salesman and lviing in Florida; Chester, who died in Ft. Plain five years ago; Ralph Alter a barber, living in Ft. Plain, and Florence who was Mrs. Edward Pflanz at her death in Utica in 1945. When her children were lit-I tie Mrs. Alter made many garments for them as well as for older j people. After the death of her hus-! band she engaged in caring foi sick or elderly people for many years. She took great pride in bringing up her family, always worked hard and enjoyed good health. She greatly appreciates the I kindnesses of her sons and daugh-i ter with whom she has made her ) home at different times.
