Adisen ceshedownformec-;»iedHr:olen me* 1 onwas s in, ofmer•ose-tuce,bMtse.reggwithriledforthevdodolentnceV’ed -ctedrdayrue-villeofyes-iree,ions sell-y toeverthisar-The following story from Indiana-wili be of interest here as Miss Irene Demoss is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John DeMoss former residents of Greenaburg:John Garvin, colored 1112 Myron street, arrested early yesterday on a charge of burglary, after it is alleged he had entered and robbed two houses, admitted in a written statement to Detectives O'Donnell yesterday that he was the man who on the night of Oct. 9, 1919, attacked Irene Demoss, 618 East Pratt street, striking her repeatedly over the head with the half of a brick. Following his confession he was slated on an additional charge of assault and battery with intent to kill.The Demoss girl, who is about 17 years old, was attacked while she was asleep in old with her sister, '-he returned home from a moving picturetheatre and retired about 10 o’clock. Shortly after midnight her parents heard her call and when they went the door found her covered with blood and bleeding from wounds in the headwhere the intruder had struck her with the brick. The half of the brick which he used as his weapon wasfound on the bed in the girl’s bedroom.Detectives had been unable to uncover and clue as to the identity of thegirl’s assailant until yesterday whenthey began questioning Garvin, who had been arrested by Lieut. Woollen and Segt, Marren, who were assigned to question him about the burglary. A chance question about the assault on the Demos 3 girl brought the statement from Garvin that he had entered a house in the northeastern section of the city several months ago. The detectives took him in an automobile past the Demoss home, which he pointed out as the heme he had entered without ; ny felicitation on the part of the detectives. He said he intended to assault her criminally. The negro said the girl awoke and he struck her repeatedly with the brick. He stated that he thought he had murdered her and he left the room immediately.Garvin was arrested after two poc-kotbooks were found in his possession. He waived examination on the burg-’ary charge in City court yesterday and was held to the grand jury under$7,000 bond.Joshua Alley, 66. He was preparing to arise and had one shoe on when he was stricken of heart failure and expired immediately.The deceased was a son of Samuel Alley one of the pioneer residents of western Clay township near the Shelby and Bartholomew line where Joshua Alley was born. After reaching manhood Mr. Alley married a Miss Wright near Waldron some 35 years ago and had since lived in that community. A few* years ago he moved into Waldron where he died.He leaves a widow, a son. George and a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Thorp, abrother, Jont Alley of Burney and two sisters, Mrs. Ida Howard of Shelby county and Mrs. Chattie Wonderly of Milford.He joined the Masonic Lodge at Milford and later transferred his membership to Waldron. He was a ekver man, a loyal friend, honest, industrious and an upright citizen.
