Artificial Mounds.—On the first- page of our paper will be found an interesting article in regard to the antiquities of Wisconsin ; and particularly in regard to the artificial mounds, scattered through tbe countiy. These mounds, it is now generally believed, were formed by a race of people -who inhabited the country before tho advent of the Indian tribes, and who were considerably ad vanced in the arts of civilation. We have two or three of these mounds on the lots on which wo are now residing. Tho largest is about 130 feet long, arid three feet high, with two arms^or legs, near the head, about 18 feet long. • Some imagine.it was intended to represent the head, trunk and shoulders of an elephant and tho body and tail of a fish: and there is perhaps a slight resemblance to those creatures. It is quite probable that by digging iu it human bone?, and perhaps j other remains, might be found; but it is quite doubtful whether wo shall have any in» clination to exhume them if there.
