Sno-fs/e Regional Library celebrating anniversariesOn April 2, 1944 the Snohomish County Library was started, following a favorable vote in the November election. The P-TA, Grange and other groups were active in campaigning for a rural library.The change in name to Sno-Isle Regional Library came in 1962 when IslandCounty voted to esifablish a rural library and joined with Snohomish County to form one library.Recently the tenth anniversary of the move of library headquarters to its present location at 1314 26 Street Everett was celebrated. For thefirst ten years the library had its headquarters in the Everett Public Library basement. In the last ten years the library has grown and another move is anticipated, this time to a headquarters building. The new building is still in the planning stage. The new quarters will be west of Marysville on Highway 99.A comparison of the latest annual report with the earliest -that of 1945 - shows that the book stock has increased from 2,798 to 153,602 volumes. Today the library also loanssound recordings and films. The first year of the library’s existence the public borrowed 16,614 books. In 1964 they borrowed 1,158,114 books, and films and records in addition.The first annual report listed eight community libraries affiliated with Snohomish County Library, AlderwoodManor was the first community library located in the unincorporated area of the county, and Edmonds the first town to contract for service, Four of these early libraries were later replaced by bookmobile stops. Today Sno-Isle Regional Library has seven community libraries in the two counties. In 1947 the library's first bookmobile began operation. Now four bookmobiles travel the roads of Snohomish and Island Counties.
