INCREASES IN SALARIES IN THE INTERNAL REVENUE DEPTPromotions to Fill Vacancies Also Made by Collector John J. Mitchell.Salary Increases and promotions 1n the force of departmont supervisors, office and flold deputies. Inspectors and clerks of the Internal Revenue Department have been announced by Collector John .T. Mitchell, the promotions being made to till vacancies caused by resignations from the service.In making there promotions and granting Increases Collector Mitchell followed the merit system, by which efficient service, based on constant study and training In tux matters and attention to duties enable the deputies to advance from minor positions In the service to high-salaried places in office and held work.This policy, which has constantly prevailed In the revenue office, has developed a splendid spirit of cooperation all through the force as shown in the recent Income tax drive when tlcld and office deputies, almost overwhelmed with the rush of business, worked evenings and Sundays without extra com-pensutlon, and with no word of complaint to keen the work current and to give all possible assistance to taxpayers who could not call during the fc'gular office hours.The increases, although Just announced by Collector Mitchell, were made effective April LThe largest Increase was given to Thomus A. McCluskey ot Lynn, head of the Income Tux Department, who receives an additional $500. George W. burrett of Brookline was made head of the cashiers' department and given an Increaoe of $250.
