NOW GOING UP —Eastern's ETV Tower Bringing Satellite Programs to Lea Co.Television •viewers in eastern New Mexico and West Texas will have the opportunity to see satellite-transmitted programs shortly after the new Eastern New Mexico UniversityEducational Television station goes on the air Sept. 1, 1S74.Other than being the first ETV station in the area, Eastern’s facility will also have the distinction of being one of the first 12 stations to ever receive programs directly from an earth-orbiting satellite, according to Duane Ryan, director of broadcasting at Eastern.Builders are currently completing construction of a 1088-foot transmission tower and antenna and the broadcast studio.The tower, which will transmit educational television programs to communities within a 74-mile radius, is being constructed on a site 46 miles southwest of Por-tales in the caprock area.Three Still In Hospital On Last DayThree patients were still in the Covington count} hospital this morning, the last day the hospital will be open.The broadcast studio is being built on the Eastern campus in Portales. Completion date for both the tower and studio is set for May 15.“We feel we will be able to begin installation of equipment in our control room at the studioabout May 15,’’ Ryan said “The only foreseen problem is that the company furnishing our equipment is presently on strike in California. If the strike continues, it might cause some delay ui obtaining equipment, but we will take other steps should that situation arise.”Ryan said he hoped to have the equipment installed and ready for FTC-allowed program tests about Aug. 1.“The program tests allow us to work out the bugs. Whatever the case, Sept. 1, is our target date for full operation,” Ryan continued.Ryan explained that the Eastern Station, KENW-TV, will be affiliated with the Public Broadcast Service (PBS).“Our affiliation will be unique in that the Rocky Mountain Corporation for Public Broadcasting is putting up a satellite, through cooperation with theNational Aeronautical Space Administration, over the Rocky Mountain Area,” Ryan said.“Eastern will be a ‘down link’ station lt;meaning KENW-TV willbe able to receive, but not transmit) and will have vocational education and career guidance programs, some in-service training programs for teachers and some adult programming available, along with our local and PBS programs,” he continued.“This is the first group of ETV stations in the country ever to receive programs directly from a satellite, Ryan commented. “The satellite will cover an areaincluding the states of Idaho, Utah, Montana, Colorado,(See TOWER Page 2)It rained in I/ivington lastnight.Well, a little bit, anyway.A light spring squall line moved across the city shortly after 10 o’clock last night, settling the dust and wetting the whistles, as the old timers used tosay.Hut it couldn’t be called adrouth-breaher by any stretchof the imagination, andaltliough there were a few puddles around on the {lavement this morning, it was too little rain to even register in the Header raingauge.
