Thus the Whitney estate, containing about 10,000 acres, cease under state domain.Shortly afterward Mrs. Richard Auchmuty of Lenox, who owned a tract adjoining the preserve, very graciously presented the land as a gift to the «tate, making 11,0000 valuable acres available to the commonwealth and thereby safeguarding for all time, the source of our water supply.It is estimated that within ten years, Pittsfield will need an additional knppiy of water to meet its normal increase in population.With this in view Mayor Francis, last year, appointed a commission to prepare plans to provide for this situation. The admitted public servioe performed by the Chamber of Commerce a few years ago will greatly simplify the problems of lt;b** *y*iTTmffsfoii. — .Incidentally, the preservation and development of forests has become a hobby with Mr. Miller, and he has rendered invaluable service in the city by safbreststton at our sources of inpir at Ashley lake and Farnham reservoir. He ii» cooperation with Mr. Bishop has been foremost in the promotion and establishment of town forests-in Berkshire, a service that will be of inestimable value In the future.
