First Indian in 400 years to be ordained tonightISLETA PUEBLO, N.M.— Edmund Savilla will receive the Diaconate in St. Augustine Church, Isleta Pueblo, N.M., at 7:30 tonight.The Most Rev. Jerome Hastrich, Bishop of the Gallup Diocese, will officiate.Savilla studied for the Gallup Diocese at St. John s Seminary, Camarillo, Calif., and is to be ordained a priest for the diocese in 1977. His ordination will be the first in 400 years. No Indian in the southwest has received major orders in the Catholic Church since the evangelization by the Franciscan Fathers in the15th centurySavilla also attended St. Lucian Seminary, Amarillo, Tex.; St. John's Seminary, Elkhorn, Neb.; and Immaculate Conception Seminary, Conception. Mo.Commenting on the ordination, Bishop Hastrich stressed its significance, as. hopefully a breakthrough in encouraging native vocations, He said no people is ever a complete Christian church until it has its own priest and deacons.Following ordination, Savilla will return to StJohn's Seminary to complete his work and begin pastoral work in the Diocese of Gallup. Upon completion ofhis fourth year of theology inthe srping of 1977, he will be ordained to the priesthood. Of a population of 250.000 in Gallup, 190,000 are Indians.Savilla's father is Joseph P. Savilla. half Pueblo and half Quechan. His mother, Lucille E. (Cornelius), is a full-blooded Oneida Indian of DePere, Wis. They reside in Albuquerque, N.M.. where both are civil service employees.Brother Philip lives in Gallup and another brother. Anthony, and sister, Christine Poolaw, live in Albuquerque.Other relatives include his grandmother, Agnes Savilla of Parker, Lorraine White of Yuma. Ritha Romo of Parker; Eleanor Wato, Zuni, N.M.; and Elmer Savilla of Ft Yuma, Calif.Friends and relatives have been invited to witness and help celebrate the holy ordination which will be followed by the traditional Indian feast at the tribal community hall.
