Supervisor tries.to clean up airThe cigarette smoke got too thick in the County Board room last Tuesday night for Sup Ralph Nielsen. Oshkosh, so he has introduced a resolution to ban smoking during Board sessions.Nielsen. whose resolution will come up for a vote next Tuesday night, challenged the right of smokers to force non-smokers to endure smoke-laden air in public places.” Nielsen said in support of his proposal:Many otherwise healthy persons are sensitive to tobacco smoke. When they find themselves in smoke-polluted atomospheres they become afflicted, with eye irritation. nasal symptoms, headache, coughing, wheezing, sore throat, nausea, hoarseness and dizziness. With some persons tobacco smoke is a secondary irritant triggering asthmatic attacks, it has been proven that smoking is related to lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, cancer of the hp and cardiovascular disease.The so-called 'right to smoke’ apparently preserve.-* fur the smoker the right to ruin his own health. What it does not do is give the smoker the right to impair the health or comfort of any other persons. As one delegate to the United Nation’s World Health Organization has pul it. 'Smoking should be confined to consenting adults in private.’ ”Nielsen noted that smoking is banned in the U* S.
