ANGUS LILLEYCouple celebrate 50th anniversaryMr. and Mrs. Angus Iilley of Portage la Prairie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 10,1976.The couple were united in St. John’s parish in Portage, April 13, 1926 by Father Derome.They lived in Leland, Haywood and Marchand, Manitoba before retiring in Portage.Mr. Lilley worked as a farm hand and labourer during the early years. He joined the Winnipeg Grendiers in 1940 and served in WWII overseas.After the war, Mr. and Mrs. Lilley moved to Marchand where he worked for Manitoba Forestry. The couple returned to Portage and Mr. Lelley joined the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires for a period of 16 years until his retirement at the age of 66.Mr. and Mrs. Lilley have 10 children, 43 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Their children have settled in all parts of Canada; Mrs. Minerva Poirier and Mr. Lawrence Lilley of Winnipeg, Mr. Wallace Lilley and Mrs. Theresa Johnston of Calgary, Mrs. Margaret Pickett of Greenwood, N.S., Mrs. Shirley Bourgeois of Atikokan, Mrs.Alice Ringuette, Mrs. Pauline Perchak and Mrs. Noella Grand, all of Portage la Prairie. One child Germaine died in early childhood.Telegrams were read from Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, MP Peter Masniuk, Leader of the Opposition Joe Clark, Mr. Esmond, secretary to the Governor-General, Liberal party leader Charles R. Huband, Premier Ed Schryer , PC leader Sterling Lyon, Lieutennant Governor F.L. (Bud) Jobin and Mayor Karen Devine.A mass was said Saturday, April 10 for Mr. and Mrs. Angus Lilley at St. Hyacinth Roman Catholic Church by Father Aurile Profontaine where they exchanged wedding bands, a gift from their children.A reception followed at the Knights of Columbus Hall.All of the couple’s children were present, except two who were unable to make the trip.The toast to Mr. and Mrs. Lilley was said by Father Aurille Profontaine of the St. Hyacinth Roman Catholic Church.Out of town guests were from Calgary, Kamloops, Winnipeg, Ontario and other points in Manitoba.
