DINWIDDIEPRINCE GEORGECHESTERFIELDSUSSEXTuesday, April 18, 1972By JOHN BARRY Progress-Index Staff Writer PRINCE GEORGE — A robbery suspect shot one police officer and held him and three others hostage during a shootout at the Eilwyn Motel on Rt. 301, Prince George, early this morning.Tommy Michael Manago, 19, of Cleveland, Ohio, was arrestedand charged with attemptedmurder, six counts of felonious assault, four counts-of abduction and one count of robbery by the Prince George Sheriff's Office.His arrest followed a long ordeal by state and local police officers to free four policemen held at gunpoint by the lone robbery suspect.According to Sherfiff John Atwood of Prince George, the incident. stemmed from an investigation of a robbery at the Eilwyn Motel around 11:45 p. m. Monday.The motel manager reported that three persons had taken $130 from a cash drawer in the office. He said they came into the office to ask for iceand took the money when the attendant turned his back.Four Prince George policemen responded to the call and located one suspect walking along Rt. 301 near the motel. He was placed in custody and taken back to the motel for questioning.Sheriff Atwood said before the suspect was searched he pulled a .38 caliber pistol from a turban he was wearing on his head.Officer Charles H. Sherman of Prince George wrestled with the subject in an attempt to grab the gun and was shot in the right hand.When the three other police officers attempted to aid Sherman, the armed suspect said he would kill the patrolman if they moved toward him.According to Sheriff Atwood, Deputy William J. All four policemen were herded into the manager’s office,Petersburg police Lt. Donald W. Kirkland and Officer H. L. Hall, responding to an assistance call, were the first policemen to reach the scene.The gunman fired one shotgun blast in the direction of Lt. Kirkland, but he was not hit. Additional state and Petersburg police had just reached the motel. According to Petersburg police, the entire night shift responded to the call.Inside the manager’s office the suspect placed the barrel of a shotgun to the neck of Officer Sherman with a necktie*When he began to move Sherman to the other side of the office, Sherman broke loose and the hostages successfully disarmed him. -Two alleged accomplices were found in one of the motel rooms and were arrested.Larry Johnson, 19, and Linda Larese Thomson, 21, both of Atlanta, Ga,, were charged with robbery.The wounded patrolman, Officer Sherman, was taken to Petersburg General Hospital and was released later this morning. Sheriff Atwood said the bullet wound on his hand was superficial.The sheriff said Manago was jailed in lieu of $80,000 bond. Both of his alleged accomplices were placed under $10,000 bond. Trial was set in Prince George for Wednesday.
