History Was Made in Recent WeeksDuring the past month history of importance was made almost every day.The lives of Americans have been affected by thesuccession of major events. They have been greeted by surprise, shock and emotion. Despite incidents of sadness, there have been someelements of hope. The series started when a relatively obscure senator from Minnesota challenged President Johnson in the NewHampshire primary election.Only a short time before the New Hampshire primary, a strong contender for the presidency and a Midwest governor, withdrew from the Republican competition. On election day in New Hampshire, the Democratic senator from Minnesota made a surprising showing. This was followed by the announcement that a New York Democratic senator would seek the presidentialnomination.Only a short time after the Kennedy announcement, the governor of New York, a strong Republican contender withdrew from the Presidential race. The most dramatic shock in the field of national politics was received when President Johnson withdrew as a candidate for renomination and possible reelection. The President also announced a partial bombing cessation in Vietnam to encourage peace talks with North Vietnam. Hanoi responded with indications of willingness to parley with the United States and its allies at a peaceconference. While it is hoped that negotiations that will result in an honorable peace can be consummated, the bold effort of the President and his advisors may or may not be fruitful. Judging from the length of time consumed in negotiations with North Korea, Americans should not be overly optimistic about an early cessation of hostilities.Announcement was also made that Gen. William C. Westmoreland will become Army chief of staff, terminating his military service in Vietnam.Political changes in recent weeks have afforded Richard M. Nixon, former vice-president, a strong lead toward the Republican nomination. There is still a possibility that Gov. Nelson Rockefeller will reconsider.Currently, the Democratic competition is between Sen. McCarthy of Minnesota and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy of New York. No one should discount the possibility that Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey will throw his hat in the ring. Some even predict that the Democratic Party will be divided into factions to the extent that delegates to the national convention of the party will insist on renomination of President Johnson. It was necessary for President Johnson to defer a trip ,to Hawaii, because of a national tragedy which occurred. I;This was the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, \a Negro leader in the Civil Rights movement :While he advocated furtherance of Civil Rights through ,non-violence, his untimely death touched off violent re- iaction in many cities of the nation, resulting in deaths, injuries and destruction of property. How racial dis- I lt;orders can be curbed during the ensuing warm weather imonths forms a national problem. !Currently, the United States is faced with major Iproblems, both national and international in scope. However, the American people in ,the past have survived stormy and uncertain crises.Important history has been made in recent weeks. {Now is the time for citizens of this nation to hold fast ito basic national principles and the foundations upon hwhich this Republic was created. i
