BALDWINS AT THE WIITINQ.Another 3t«nmrVcable Kjhlbltka LnitNight—The Crouao Ctwo,How over It is that the Baldwins perform their feats in the remarkable performances they are now giving at the AVioting, the fact remains that any theory which may be advanced in explanation, except that of the possession by Mrs. Baldwin o£ some mysterious endowment not vouchsafed to the average 1 mortal, runs speedily against a barrier almost as formidable as is tiienatural disinclination to concede the occult itself. The feats of Mrs. Baldwin arc different from anything done by KftSiar or any other of the professional jugglers and mystiffers of whom we have knowledge. Where questions are asked by the interlocutor, us lu the instances referred to, if is natural atleast to assume that the trick of making fairly accurate replies is due to a system of communieatiou quite inexplicable to the uninitiated, but at the satno time easily within the range of the practical and understandable under proper conditions. In the case of mind or muscle feuding also, one can believe thatit is all possible under proper condition i, although or all professed mindreaders so-called are really such. So with hypuotio phenomenn. The fact of the possibility of subjective suggestion | acting objectively on auother mind has been scientifically established. But in tin* case of the Baldwins no suggestionsin uo lirst instance are made by theProfessor. The audience is given paper on which to write questions. This be ing dou the papers are retained in the possession of the writers, and the nature of these is only disclosed to Professor Baldwin after the writer lias boon named by Mrs. Baldwin, described as to persuu in some cases, and the question asked already answered. Thouthe paper is handed over and the question rend aloud. Clearly there is noroom here for suggestion of the ordinary kind.Cast evening the seance, or whateverit may be culled, was most interesting. One question was who killed DetectiveHarvey. “Dink” or Charles ATjJsou?” the reply being that Charles was the mum Another question, put by a prominent citizen, was whether Ansd White, brother of Mrs. Crouse, was alive or dead. The reply, given as always, before the question was made known— was the description of a murder in a mining region of California, the mur-iered man *ing Ansel White. Airs. .Baldwiu added that this took place■seventeen years ago and that -a.n-set had a son also named Ansel, who is now living some here in Washington State. The truth as to the alleged murder, etc.. remains to be determined, of course. The patently remarkable thing in this case as in the others isthat Mrs. Baldwin knew the question asked. The exhibition Is well worth the seeing however one may account for theperformances.Dice and Barton.
