It was ihe day w hen the members of the volunteer fire department paraded the streets in their pretty uniforms and gaily bedecked engines and trucks.The people generally observed the day as they did Mardi Gras by takiugmutli of St. Francis street. Itcfunds were derived from voluntary donations from many leading citizens who appreciated the services of the fire department in saving their lives and thei r p ro pe r i y from d e s t ru e t io11at the risk of their health and their lives and whose only reward was theconsciousness of having well performed a self-disposed duty. Under an act of the legislature entitled Anan. to raise a fund for the benefit of.ip! - * *. jv i#t ;the (Ire companies in the city of Mo bile. approved January 30. 1839. each insurance agency doing business in the city of Mobile was required to pay an annual tax of $200 to the Fire Department.
