Outsiders Have Shot At Winning SizzlerSTAFFORD — An “outsider” has never won the Spring Sizzler at the Stafford Springs Motor Speedway, but if sheer numbers have anything to do with it, that record could be shattered this year. This year’s entry list for the Saturday and Sunday 80-lap affair shows that over 60 of the 106 entries received do not call Stafford Speedway “home”. A total of 10 Track Champions and the defending U.S. National NASCAR Modified* Champion, Jerry Cook, will lead the outsiders’ assault on the $18,000 purse.Joining Cook will be Paul Radford, Dick Dunn, Charlie Jarzombek, Ted Wesnofske, Richie Evans, Geoff Bodine and George Summers.1974 Spring Sizzler and Stafford track champion, Bugs Stevens, will lead the hometown forces which include Ed Flemke (’73 Sizzler winner), Ron Bouchard, Gene Bergin, Bobby Santos, Leo Cleary, Ray Miller, Jerry Dostie, and Brian Ross.Stevens feels confident that the winner’s share of the purse will again go to one of Stafford’s own. “This is a tricky track, especially in the Spring. Each year the track itself shifts a little over the winter and unless you’ve run here a lot, it can mess you up”. He continues, “Just look at the records for all the racing here and look at how few outsiders have ever won, and that will tell vou a little something about whatI’m talking about.”Records show- that in almost 75 modified events held at Stafford since 1967, only two drivers have been able to snare wins.Charlie Jarzombek took one in 1969 (May 30) and Jerry Cook captured the Permatex 150 last year (July 3).Further complicating things is Stafford’s new 12Vfe inch tire rule, which will be in effect for the Sizzler, a rule which Jerry Cook feels will even the score for the outsiders. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in favor of running on small rubber, but at least all of us including the regulars will be on an even keel when it comes to tires. We’ll all be setting our cars up for the first time with these tires.”Setting up will be the order of the day Saturday while Sunday will see five qualifying heats, two consolation events, and the 80-lap main beginning at 1 p.m.Chicago Acquires Defenseman WilsonOAKLAND (UPI) - The Oakland Raiders have traded Nemiah Wilson, a seven-year defensive back, to the Chicago Bears for an undisclosed draft pick.Wilson, 32, joined the Raiders as a free agent after three years at Denver.Oakland now has five veteran defensive backs, plus kick return specialist Ron Smith.
