At Donna a write-in cam paign lacked only 11 votes of de feating Mayor Walter Weaver.Upset victories at Henderson Pharr and Texas City saw mayors swept out of office.Lindale elected the first woman ever to run for the city council there. At Sherman a woman won a spot in the run-off election.Negroes who sought city commission posts at Sherman and Wichita Falls were defeated.Port Arthur approved a SI,750, 000 bond issue. At Elect ra, a proposal to adopt a city manager form of government was rejected At San Diego, Tobin’s slate held a slight lead in all races, ranging from 5 votes in the mayor’s race to 101 votes in some aldermen’s races. The Parr slate was a close second. Candidates of the Freedom Party were far back in third place.At Benavides, Parr’s candidate for mayor, Octavio Saenz, was elected 607' to 074 over Regulo Benavides of the Freedom Party. Old Party candidats for aldermen, I.copoldo Chapa and Reyes Ramos, had almost a 2 to 1 victory.Ballots were impounded in WehbOdessa Returns Unopposed Four In Light VoteA total of lM votes was cast In Odessa’s city election Tuesday when the mayor and three council-men were reelected without opposition.Mayor Harold Downs won tht largest number of votes, polling 182 of the 191 cast. His total was followed hy Councilman Ed Costello with 179, L. B. Cooper with 174 and Paul Phillips with 1G8.In Place 1, with 48 votes cast, the mayor polled 35. Costello 33, Phillips 31 and Cooper 30.In Place 2, with 75 votes, the mayor and Costello both polled 73 votes. Cooper 71 and Phillips 70.in Place 3, with 28 votes cast. Mayor Downs and Cooper both received 28 votes, and Costello and Phil lips both won 27.In Place 4, with 48 votes cast, the mayor and Costello both received 46 votes. He received 1,539 to 493 for Mayor C, L, Abernathy. The upset stemmed from the fact that Plainview failed to get a 3 million dollar highway project recently.It was also a victory for write-in forces at Arp. Ed Watts got 83 for mayor, defeating the incumbent, D. B. Alexander, who got 45. R. B.
