Get the Seed at McClu.ng Bros.RUMOURED INDIAN TROUBLES INthe Horth-WestA Manitoba contemporary lias the following with reference to rumours of Indian troubles already telegraphed by our own correspondent:—u In our lust issue we published a communication from a settler in the extreme western settlement of the Province—Palestine—indicating that considerable uneasiness existed there on account of rumours that a body of Sioux Indians from Dakota contemplated a descent upon the settlement in early spring. A meeting of the inhabitants had been held, at which it was resolved to petition the Lieut.-Governor* This was done, and in response, early la3t week, Hon. Mr. Norquay was commissioned to visit the settlement, to make enquiries, and take such steps asshould appear immediately necessary,—Hon. Mr. Norquay has returned, and reports the alarm was awakened by a report brought in from Fort Ellice by a Hudson’s Bay officer, or employee, named McKay, to the effect that an unusually large number uf Indians was congregating at that point from the other side of the boundary line. They were also said to manifest a more independent line of conduct than ordinarily, and express themselves that they were coming down to the settlements in the spring. There are also said to be corroborative reports from other quarters. Two gentlemen, resident near the Portage, have received letters from the interior—one from Lake Qu ’ Appk —that the Sioux there have also something in contemplation* The promoter is said to be a notorious character, well known in Red River by the name of Jlacette. The number of the Indians that would proba bly take part in a movement of the kindhas already been variously estimated,some of the reports going the length of representing that over a thousand lodges are already on the move, near and towards Pori ** ’Ellice. Hon. Mr. Norquay called a meet ing of the settlers of Palestine, and aftei discussion they organised into a company electing for their officers Messrs, Cory Ferguson and Davidson, respectively, ii the order named, captain, lieutenant, am ensign.
