It is a lighthouse that shows rock and reef and signals danger• It is good in itself and calculated to do nothing but good. Traffic in souls will never cease until we punish by severest legislation—until the text ‘the wages of sin is death’ is preached by parent, pulpit, press and such pictures as TRAFFIC IN SOULS.”Rev. G. L. Morrill, pastor People’s Church, Minneapolis, Minn.Rev, G. L. Morrill used our great film as the text for his sermon on “Go to Church Sunday” February 1 and severely assailed the local censors who had refused to approve the picture. Yet the film was shown—is now being shown— and has created a profound impression on the best people of Minneapolis.“Consistency is a jewel which many bediamoned critics never wear,” declared Dr. Morrill. “They spend from two to five dollars a seat at French plays and Italian operas, which make a specialty of violating the Seventh Commandment, and then rush to the Mayors office with frantic appeal to prevent the poor man from spending 25 cents for a picture that not only pleases but preaches the sermon ’What shall it profit men and women if they gain the whole world and lose their own souls?* ”Dr. Morrill’s view was the viewr taken by the authorities of all the big cities of America—but Chicago. The vice commissions and ministers’ associations ofthose cities likewise shared that view of the picture. They not only approved it, but actually demanded that it be shown in the interests of America’s youngwomanhood.Dr. Morrill’s idea that “some people mistake prudery for piety and ignorance for innocence” must strike home with force in the city of Chicago where censorship has run riot and exceeded allbounds of reason and law.If the censors of this city want the traffic in young women to thrive—if they want to see countless souls hurled into perdition—they could adopt no betterway than to refuse a permit for this film. And you censors must know that the traffickers in souls in Chicago, as well as their financial backers, are tickled to death over our failure to secure a permit for this film. There is absolutely no sane reason why this picture should not be shown. It is in no sense immoral or indecent. It simply shows young women how to save themselves—how to avoid the subtle influences of the scoundrels who seek to steal and entrap them for immoral purposes. The picture is wTorth its weight in diamonds, and every official connected with the city administration ought to de-mand its exhibition. 1/It shows an honest young police officer, inspired with the desire to destroy the traffic, wrapping his coils about the villains and eventually destroying them. In a private exhibition given to the Advertising Club the other night, several hundred men arose to their feet at the close of the exhibition and cheered forOfficer Burke.%We are going to hold a private exhibition of TRAFFIC IN SOULS for thebenefit of the Clergy of Chicago—forthe Vice Commission and all the goodmen and women who are engaged in thissoul-saving effort. We are going to riseor fall by their opinion of this picture*Our cards are on the table face up* Weknow what this picture can do toward adestruction of this immoral traffic inwomanhood, but we want the verdict of our representative citizens. In the meantime we would like to ask the authorities what their objection is to an exhibition of this great moral lesson?Universal Film Manufacturing Co.Carl Laemmle, President“The Largest Film Manufacturing Concern in the UniverseStudios in New York, New Jersey and California.
