Copy must he furnished for all local notices. the power to seize the lslan is cr that Congress possesses the authority to an* ne* them to * the United States by an ex Pit rte proceeding like the Newland! resolution. Hut in these days, when every new move is a step toward imperialism, and when the temper o‘ the people seems to be in favor of a system of colonies and dependencies, precedents do not count for mach, the founders ut fie government are sneeringly referred to as men incapable of formulating a system of government that would meet the exigencies of the present situation, It is therefore probable that annexation will be consummated before Congreve adjourned. Since we have entered upon a campaign of conquest and territorial extension, it really makes but I lr tie difference about the fate of the resolution. Hi <>« I*'ii'* .% i mea ML. “The livening Paper Publishes the News of TODAY; the Morning Paper the News of YESTERDAY/* — Horace Greeley. THE ANNEXATION SCHEME. A few days ago Senator Allyou promised the Democratic senators who oppose the annexation of Hawaii thai, if the bond hill was not delayed, the Hawaiian question would g) over to the next session, it now appears that he will not he able to redeem his promise. The Newland! resolution has already passed the House and i- n >w under consideration in the Senate, Senator White and others will oppose it, and there are evidences that one of the most desperate battles in the history of that body will be fought. Senator V\ bite is a man of wonderful resources and there is no doubt that he will exhaust every parliamentary obstruction to resist it-passage. In the meantime the annexation lobby is working with an energy that seems to have been horn of desperation. They are accusing all who oppose aum \ atioii of working in the interest the sugar trust, when, as a matter OI fact, the annexation lobby i* principals made up of the sugai trti“t. There rn not a member of the Senate who we* involved in the sugar trust scandal -. couple of years ago who is not tod \ ardently in favor of annexation. Even California papers have been attack! Mr. Oxuard and accusing him of being a member of the sugar trii-t. Mr. Ox nard i“ a ti ember of the Beet Growl is’ j Association He has two large factorn I in the blate. Die augur trust, fie oppose* indexation ; because he believe* that if it is con • ummated the sugar beet industry of tile State will lie greatly damaged arui, possibly, hopelessly injured. A hub ^Spreckels and Mr. Oxnard huve mole money invested iii California industries than anv other tw > men in tin* blate. It is ridiculous to assume that tin v are not influenced by honest motives iii their opposition to a scheme which wilt bring disaster to one of California’s ii -dustries, Hus persistent attempt to ptoinnl-gate a falsehood with intent to appeal to popular aversion to the sugar trust show* that the annexationists do not credit tho people with ordinary intelligence. The beet growing interests a re not identical with tho-.* ot the sugar trust, and no sophi-try tbut may be employed can convince ice people of it. There is no patriotism r humanity behind this annexation •(hems. Tho motives are purely selfish, The President is so anxious about thin that it is said fie in unug Ilia patronage to influence votes, He has i un ti real •ned that ii the resolution ie not adopted fie wilt setae the islands us a military necessity, A Democratic senator who is bitterly opposed loan liexation denies thai the President has 6111 ho uh (liven Away It in certainly gratifying to the public to know ot one concern in the land that i- not afraid to he generous to the needy md .“offering.
