Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - September 5, 2015, Winnipeg, Manitoba C M Y K PAGE E6 T HE tents have been raised, the horses have arrived and the excitement has been stoked. Just what exactly will the $ 30- million Odysseo , the largest touring production in the world, bring to Winnipeg audiences when it opens on Thursday? At Odysseo ’s core is the relationship between horse and man. The story takes place in a dream world and follows the interactions between humans and horses in a variety of natural settings, highlighting both the beauty of the world Odysseo has created and the elegance of the horses it showcases. But the relationship forged between Odysseo ’s 45 acrobats, riders and dancers and the 65 animals doesn’t end onstage. Trainers spend months, sometime years, working with the horses, learning their personalities and adapting their styles to suit the needs of each particular animal. Elise Verdoncq, 29, has been a trainer and performer with Cavalia for nearly six years and says creating a relationship of trust between herself and the horses is the critical first step to creating the show. “ It’s like when you first meet a person — you start a relationship and you talk, and with the horses it’s the same,” she says of meeting a new horse. “ It’s just not really with the voice — he’s not answering me — but the way he’s moving is how he tells me. By passing time with him, I know what I need to do to start building that relationship with him, what I need to do to win his trust.” Verdoncq has been given the moniker the “ Horse Whisperette,” owing to her ability to communicate with the horses using body language and only a few verbal cues. It’s clear in the way the horses respond to her she has created that desired relationship of trust. Verdoncq, who grew up in northern France, has spent much of her life immersed in the equine world. She began riding at the age of six and started performing when she was a teenager. Her intention was always to find a career and just ride horses as a hobby, but when the opportunity came up to join Cavalia, which produces Odysseo , she thought, why not? “ I always thought I would become a lawyer, so I graduated school; I finished everything, I just had to pass the bar. Then I heard that they were looking for riders in Cavalia, so I was thinking I’d just do that for a year, at the same time as getting ready to pass the bar. “ But, I ended up staying with Cavalia and I never passed the bar,” she says with a laugh. Verdoncq’s star moment in Odysseo is when she performs the “ Liberty,” a routine involving a group of horses that are free around her. She gets them to perform choreographed moves using just her voice and body movement. Because she uses nothing to physically guide the horses, Verdoncq says there are times the animals go off and do their own thing, ignoring her commands, but that it’s all part of the show. The horses are still wild animals and are encouraged to act as such, even when they are in the middle of a performance. “ That’s what I really enjoy about ( Odysseo ). It feels like horses are not machines,” she says. “ We want them to keep their spirit and be free, and I have the feeling when something happens that’s not supposed to in the show, people really enjoy it a little more because it shows more the relationship that we have with the horses.” That relationship is also a strong consideration when working out the details of the massive Odysseo set. Set designer Guillaume Lord was given a mammoth task: create a stage 1,626 square metres in size that can accommodate dozens of performers and horses without either inhibiting them or dwarfing them. “ It was a great challenge,” admits Lord, who has been working as a set designer since 1994. “ What was really difficult was how to understand what this was going to be when you build it. It’s all in your head, and even if you do drawings and some models, it’s so big it’s really hard to understand.” The first step was to figure out how to work around Odysseo ’s most challenging aspect: horses would be galloping around his set, often running free with no reins to hold them back. “ It all began with that — trying to really understand what a horse needs to perform, because that’s the base of everything in the show,” he says. “ The kind of curve they need, the kind of space, everything was based on that to make sure they don’t hurt themselves.” Lord’s sets change with the progression of the story: a three- dimensional forest morphs into a hilly landscape before the audience’s eyes; other iterations include a desert, a mountain and a lake, all created under the confines of the White Big Top. “ And we’ve got water!” he adds. “ We said, ‘ OK, let’s have a lake in there,’ and that’s easy to say in a meeting, but then you talk to the people who are involved in more technical aspects and you know they won’t have a good sleep after hearing that,” he says, chuckling. Though Odysseo is just one of a few large shows Lord has worked on for both Cirque du Soleil and Cavalia, he says there’s nothing like it in terms of sheer size and the volume of equipment and people the show moves around from place to place. “ It’s like touring a little city, because there’s so much stuff with the horses and everybody… it still amazes me when I get there and see all the people — it’s incredible. It’s like building a theatre each time, so nothing compares.” Erin. lebar@ freepress. mb. ca Twitter: @ NireRabel E 6 WINNIPEG FREE PRESS, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2015 ENTERTAINMENT winnipegfreepress. com VALID SEPTEMBER 4, 2015 - SEPTEMBER 10, 2015 NO ESCAPE ( 14A) ( Violence) Fri, Sun 1: 20, 3: 05, 5: 40, 8: 15, 10: 50, 11: 30; Sat 12: 20, 3: 00, 5: 35, 8: 15, 10: 55; Mon- Thurs 1: 20, 3: 00, 5: 30, 8: 05, 10: 40 STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON ( 14A) ( Substance Use, Coarse Language, Violence) Fri 1: 45, 3: 50, 7: 10, 10: 25, 10: 30; Sat 12: 30, 3: 50, 7: 10, 10: 30; Sun- Thurs 3: 50, 7: 10, 10: 30 BACKCOUNTRY ( STC) Fri, Sun- Thurs 2: 35, 5: 00, 7: 25, 9: 50; Sat 12: 10, 2: 35, 5: 00, 7: 25, 9: 50 SINISTER 2 ( 14A) ( Language May Offend, Disturbing Content, Brutal Violence) Fri 12: 40, 3: 05, 5: 30, 7: 55, 11: 25; Sat 12: 40, 3: 05, 5: 30, 7: 55, 10: 25; Sun 12: 40, 3: 05, 5: 30, 7: 55, 10: 25, 11: 25; Mon- Thurs 3: 05, 5: 30, 7: 55, 10: 25 AMERICAN ULTRA ( 14A) ( Gory Scenes, Coarse Language, Brutal Violence) Fri- Thurs 6: 45, 9: 10 A WALK IN THE WOODS ( STC) Fri 1: 20, 5: 25, 8: 00, 10: 35; Sat 12: 15, 2: 50, 5: 25, 8: 00, 10: 35; Sun- Tue, Thurs 1: 20, 2: 50, 5: 25, 8: 00, 10: 35; Wed 2: 50, 5: 25, 8: 00, 10: 35; Star & Strollers Screening, Wed 1: 30 SHAUN THE SHEEP MOVIE ( G) Fri, Sun- Tue 2: 15; Sat 11: 45, 2: 15; Wed 1: 30; Thurs 1: 35 WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS ( 14A) ( Substance Abuse, Coarse Language) Fri- Thurs 7: 20, 10: 00 THE TRANSPORTER REFUELED: THE IMAX EXPERIENCE ( STC) Fri- Sun 12: 40, 3: 10, 5: 40, 8: 10, 10: 40; Mon- Thurs 2: 25, 5: 10, 7: 35, 10: 05 MVP: MOST VALUABLE PRIMATE ( PG) Sat 11: 00 THE VISIT ( 14A) ( Frightening Scenes, Disturbing Content) Thurs 7: 00, 9: 30 SILVERCITY ST.
