Or. Crean gave an evening o Rudyard Kipling poems and stories to a Small Circle of initiates. Kipling so the program note informs us was the angry Youngsman of the late victorian it goes on to state that he was a kind of rebel which is vague to say the least. Kipling was none of these and would be ashamed to see his name so used. Kipling was a Man at one with his Fellows and gifted in the literary arts. He explored All facets of this Art to the fullest and has Given us some of the finest literature to come out of his time. I poems Are warm and human his stories full of humor and passion life was for the Liv ing. The first portion of Gram was Given Over to poems and a Story about the British in India in the 1860s. This was nol or. Crean at his Best nor Kipling at his Best. Both could have done better. The selection of Kipling s works was evidently done by or. Crean As he devised the show but Kipling was not shown to advantage and As a result neither was or. Irean. Or. Crean used a technique common to a oncologists that of changing voices when speak no to the audience and per forming. Unfortunately during his part of the show it was at Imes impossible to Tell which Vas which. Or. Crean fell put f character several times and did not carry off the work he bad prescribed for himself successfully. He did not seem to know what to do with his bands and bandied them about As if they were rather useless Appen Dages that somehow just got in the Way. The Scarlet mess jacket was ill fitting and added a pompous touch that detracted from the production. The second half of the eve Ning was much better arid be ter received by the Small Aud e n c e these were Genera poems and stories and mor contemporary for an audience after world War one. The highlight of these was a Story titled cupids arrows. Or. Crean has resurrected Kipling from a grave he was never put into. Kipling lives yet. Ask any child of seven bout the Jungle Book. The memory of Kipling s works r a special one is fondly retained in the heart of each Man he was touched through his words. Perhaps these memories should be left untouched to be treasured and Savoured like Fine old Brandy. The Sun never sets runs to dec. 1 at 8 . Nightly. Prime minister Trudeau was asked by the opposition Leader n the commons to consult with Quebec authorities to set up Uch a commission. Opposition members applauded the Sugges on. Or. Trudeau said he would refer to have or. Stanfield make such a proposal to him in writing. He said it was a rather intriguing i wish the opposition would either make a Clear proposal or perhaps write to me in that respect and indicate what kind of joint commission the opposition Leader would like to see set up Between Quebec and the fed eral government. I will certainly consider it. However i would appreciate a Clear explanation of the propos Al. I must say it does not strike me As a very practical one or a procedure that or Trudeau declared. Or. Stanfield explained be making the suggestion that attorney general Jerome Choquette of Quebec had suggested Federal regional eco nomic expansion minister Jean Marchand was guilty of exaggeration in describing events leading lip to the crisis. The opposition Leader said Cho Quette had complained there had been too Many conflicting comments and opinions comin out of Ottawa during Thev v could we have such a join inquiry with a View to deepen ing our understanding of the development of terrorism in the province of or. Stan Field asked. When or. Trudeau said h was not too impressed with the proposal of a joint inquiry or s t a n f i e 1 d explained that he would originally Lui Vej the prime minister to commission on his own. How Ever he had assumed that or Trudeau would be happier if he were asked to consult first with Premier Robert Bourassa of Quebec so As to include that province in the inquiry. Referring to the charges of brutality levelled against the Quebec police this week by 25 year old Lise Rose during the inquest into Quebec labor min ister Pierre Laporte s death or. Stanfield earlier urged that some method of an impartial Independent inquiry into the charges should be arranged. Or. Stanfield had called for an Independent review Board earlier in the debate on the special emergency measure which is designed to replace the War measures act however prime minister Trudeau has rejected that request on the grounds jut the Premier of Quebec Rod not want to be placed in the position of hav ing big brother watching Over the administration of the War measures act in Quebec. Liberal policy convention de Legates had endorsed my. Stan Field s idea last weekend. The opposition Leader said the government had dismissed such an Independent review Board on the grounds that it would be an insult to the Quebec authorities and police. However now that the Quebec police have been charged with brutality he added the Justice minister in fairness to Quebec police am canadians generally should arrange some methods to have an impartial Independent inquiry in brutality charges made. Such charges when left up in the air cast a Shadow of doubt on the police in Quebec and upon the administration of jus Tice in the whole said or. Stanfield. Justice minister Turner said the question was framed in such a Way that he could not Deal with it properly during the question period. I think Iny announcement will be forthcoming either from Premier Bourassa or from the attorney general of said or. Turner. Cercle Moliere s play Les Belles sours the Sisters in by Michel Tremblay opened wednesday night at the St. Boniface cultural Center. It is a terrifying exciting and sadistically funny work of Art. The action is set in the Dingy Kitchen of an apartment located in a poor working class District of Montreal. Germaine Lauzon a housewife has won a contest that will enable her to Rise above her present condition and those of her neighbors. These neighbors her Sisters and Sisters in Law Are invited up to the Flat. During the course of the evening gossip gives Way to an increasing display of jealousy and envy by the Sisters in Law toward the Good Fortune of Germaine. By a series of monologues the ultimate revolt and extreme Dis satisfaction of each woman is brought out. The talk becomes Small and Petty the play ends with an out and out Brawl. The play is a massive put Down of every facet of the typically French Canadian Way of life from Bingo to religion from the Mother and the Home to politics. It is extremely funny but the audience is unconsciously laughing at itself. An important element of the play is the a form of French Canadian Slang which is magnified to a breaking Point. It is vulgar but it is real. For such is the essence of the play it does not deny reality but rather astounds the Audi ence by its emphasis on the Basic pettiness and cruelty of Man or woman. The director Roland Mahe. Has done an absolutely splendid Job. The troupe works Well together and the message comes out Strong. The majority of audiences will probably tend to dismiss the play As amusing but others will be totally revolted and or stricken by the tragic pathos of the situation. The Jouval May pose a problem for English speaking people but Les Belles sours is a highly recommendable play that should be seen by every one.
