Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - November 14, 1970, Winnipeg, ManitobaWinnipeg free press saturday november 14, 1970 Jimmy having worked As a musician for a consider Able time i have been afforded the Opportunity to meet a lot of people people from All walks of life from rounders to Royalty. On reflecting Over the years i can think of few friendships that Haven t begun through some aspect of music or the music business either directly or indirectly. It was a letter that i came across the other Day while rummaging through my files that triggered my reflections. Postmarked Kitimat . And dated 1953 it was from a Friend whom i had first met exactly 10 years prior in Borden England through our having a mutually avid appreciation of music. I had just arrived overseas As an artillery reinforce ment and one evening while crowding the radio in the can teen to listen to a jazz program on the bbl i found there was another Soldier just As intent As me on hearing the sound. That s How i met Olie and our subsequent Friendship was a lasting one. We went our separate ways during our tour of duty overseas but we always kept in touch and on returning to Canada after the War our Friendship continued although we Seldom travelled together Over the ensuing years. I was married and was looking to raising a family while Olie was single with the Gypsy in his soul and he drifted around the country from one City to another Montreal Toronto Vancouver Fredericton showing up every so often in Winnipeg when we would get together and reminisce. Olie never held a Job for any length of time. Work never did fit in too Well with his pattern of living. However a depth of soul was sometimes displayed in his All too rare serious moments. His letters too were rare but usually gems of amusing correspondence. He wrote As he spoke in the jargon of the Rounder with jocular refer ence to his predicaments. To letter the other Day was amusing for me so i thought i might share his humor with readers of night beat. Dear Jimmy n i yeah i know promised to write and it s been a year now but i know you would t want any sad missives so kept putting it off till now. Things Ain t what they used to be Man i m working now How about since i came Back out to the coast i been Doin nothing but Stan Din still Only put in one months work again and that september. Needed some togs at the time so made like a citizen with the 9 to 5 routine. The Winter was a bit of. A Flop for me not much Coin but did manage to Cut it up considerably. Finally got framed into taking this Job As the Chick that was going for the rent was playing the stall and faking it like she was sick and jul in t get to that work anymore so the j pressure was put on me and it was either go to work or get some fresh action Well getting fresh action in Winter is Kinda sad unless you be got a . To. Operate with. I had no bread at All and the soles on my Kix had gone South and that rain every Day was Givin me beat sox so once again Here i am a citizen applied for a Job up Here in March to work in the of fice but nothing happened so came up As a labourer in april. I was operating one of those mexican drag lines idiot stick for the first two weeks up every morning at and work at All Day Long at the Bottom of a 7-ft. Ditch trying to shake off All my excess baggage and with that Lousy rain coming Down All the time till at night. It sure Shook me up getting used to but i pulled thru alright. Then i got a Call from the personnel manager and he put the fix in for me to go to work in the office. This is anyway the Job is a Breeze but the Boss is a gunsel. There is no overtime work and they charge for Board so the loot Ain t so Forte either. I be been Here two months now and got nothing in the sock. Of course i be done myself some Good had to buy work clothes and boots and stuff and have sent some change out to pay off a few Small accounts in Vancouver. Also bought a new front. My Mother sent me a clipping out of the mpg. Paper announcing the birth of your daughter and so i offer my belated congrats to both of you. Now you got a vocalist As Well As a Trio so As a ten percenter you la have nothing but Bux. Must Cost a for them groceries though he the letter goes on with news of musicians who were Mutual friends and who were working in Vancouver at the time. He also asks about Winnipeg friends before Clos Well daddy guess that winds it up for this time. Sure would appreciate some words from you so get with me Waterman s and put it Down he. My very Best to Fay Bobby David Ian and yourself. The end you pal although it was five years later he actually did pay me the without my Ever having to ask for it. It had Good Day at the track and we happened to meet in a downtown while the night was still Young. Olie has mellowed with the years but his philosophy has t changed much. He works As a bartender from time to time. Israel to receive 18 More sky Hawks Washington special tons Israel will get about 18 More a-4 skyhawk fighter bombers under president Nix on s special million Aid package informed sources said thursday. This new Batch of sky Hawks will be in addition to the 18 f 4e phantom warplanes about 200 modern tanks and other armament within the same Spe Cial credit arrangement for Israel. The million for Israel for fiscal 1971 is part of the request for extra Money the Pentagon intends to Send to Congress be tween now and the thanksgiving Holiday. The total defence department supplemental May surpass billion one reason some Nixon administration officials now admit the deficit for this fiscal year could come to be tween billion and billion. The special Money request for Israel is expected to go through Congress with Little resistance. President Nixon s expressed policy is to maintain an arms balance in the Mideast Between the israelis and arabs. Less explicitly stated another objective in giving Israel extra weaponry is the administration s desire to Foster peace talks Between the israelis and arabs. The a-4 sky Hawks in that context Are to help make up for the Advance of soviet Sam-2 and Sam-3 anti aircraft Missi Les into the standstill zone on Egypt s Side of the Suez canal. . Officials put this in the category of rectification of the balance. Israel already has received about 88 sky Hawks from the United states with the bulk of that total formed into three squadrons of the a-4h Model. About 13 of the 88 Are training version of the same air plane. It is understood that Israel in preference to the older a-4h, wants the More powerful a-4m in this new Batch of fighters. Mcdonnell Douglas is producing the a-4m for the Marine corps. The a-4ms for Israel presumably will come off that production line. Even with its upgraded engine the a-4m is still a sub sonic aircraft. But this does not bother the israelis. They use the a-4 mainly As a bomber not a fighter to take on the supersonic soviet mig21s that Egypt has. The israelis added a 30 Milli meter French gun to the a-4s they now have in service. So a-4s, protected with an umbrella of supersonic phantoms and Mirage 3cs, also can be used to destroy enemy aircraft on the ground. The single seater a-4 at around million is about half the Cost of the More sophisticated two Man f-4. Yet it is regarded As a highly accurate bomber. While the million ear marked for Israel will buy modern weaponry to combat arms supplied to the arabs by Russia the rest of the Money in. The Pentagon s billion plus supplemental comes under the.
