Others like Boston s Bobby Orr for example have produced instructional books aimed to Aid youngsters starting out on a hockey career. Some of the publications Are the end product of collaboration Between the athlete and a qualified writer. In such cases both names appear on the Book cover. Others Are simply ghosted with no mention made of the individual who put the words to paper. Quiet a few of these books have reached our desk from time to time having been forwarded by the publish ers for review. Some have been excellent Reading. Others hardly Worth the paper they re printed on. Over All though we be found there is too much sameness to them. It has remained for Brian Conacher late of the Toron to Maple Leafs and a one time member of Canada s National team to write what we consider to be the most in Teresing and forthright hockey Book we have Ever read. Entitled hockey in Canada the Way it is Conacher pulls no. Punches. From beginning to end he Calls a Spade a Spade As he comments on All facets of professional and Amateur hockey in this country. Manitoban will find Conacher s Book particularly interesting because much of it is devoted to hockey Canada and the late and lamented National team which was based in Winnipeg during most of its lifetime. A coach he was not one gathers Reading through the 145 pages that Brian s period of service in professional hockey with Rochester and then the Parent tronto Maple Leafs was not a particularly Happy one for him. So much so that he voluntarily retired from pro ranks in 1968. Conacher was certainly not enamoured with punch imlach his coach while he toiled in the service of the Toronto club and perhaps that is Why he quit. He writes punch s coaching ability suffered in the Light of my experience with father Bauer organizer and first coach of the National Bauer the ability to communicate demonstrate and teach while punch was in the tradition of every other coach i been exposed to in pro Hocky. Their Job was one of team supervision enforcing regulations discipline training answering the news Media and changing lines. Imlach s strength Lay in being a Good strategist an effective manipulator of players and a Good Man with a Hunch. To my mind a coach he was the More one reads about Conacher s tenure with the Maple Leafs the More one realizes he disliked almost everything there is about professional hockey particularly the bickering Over salary and the fact that negotiations until recently at any rate were All in favor of the club owners. Once a player signed his first contract the owners Heid the big stick thereafter. F game needs help Conacher is of the belief that professional and Ama Victir hockey As we know it today is in a bad Way and expresses fears for its future. In his introductory remarks he comments professional hockey needs help and they have been inc Lam to recognize it. This help lies in the classrooms of North America. If hockey won t get into the classrooms then the students most probably won t get into hockey in the future. With the experiences that i have in All the areas that the game of hockey is played in Over the last 15 years and from observations that i have made i have Rome to believe most strongly that the game of hockey in Canada is going Down a dead end Street unless it is worked Back into an educational environment. This is True not just for professional hockey development but just As much for Amateur hockey development. To bring about the reorganization and renovation of the game of hockey at All Levels of Amateur and professional play and its co ordination with Scholastic oriented development in Canada there is a definite need for a third party which is neither All professional nor All Amateur neither All school nor All hockey. Its name should be hockey he is by the Way. Extremely sceptical of the latter organization its intents and purposes. In viewing the International hockey picture the former Toronto player believes that the growing strength of the game in Europe has not been fully understood or appreciated in this country. He says who As Sumes that Canada can continue to dominate hockey Al most automatically is just whistling in the coaching is poor he is extremely critical of the coaching in Canada. Here he says we should be far out in front by virtue of so Many More years of experience but arc in fact falling behind. J coaching in this Conacher comments has often consisted of Little except changing lines seeing to players conditioning and maintaining team morale. Instruction in fundamentals and a scientific and modern approach to the physical conditioning methods of training have been almost totally neglected and especially so at the level where this should be most important in the coaching and training of younger players. And Paradox j Mically it is the belter players who often receive the least instruction. They Are naturally so Modi More capable than others that their coaches leave them atone with the resort that they go on practising their mistakes.
