The following movies have been previously reviewed by Free Press movie critic Randall King, unless otherwise noted.
NOW PLAYING
CINDERELLA
Grant Park, Kildonan Place, McGillivray, McGillivray VIP, Polo
Park, St. Vital, Towne. G. 106 minutes.
Kenneth Branagh directs a ( more or less) live- action rendition
of the Cinderella story. But the lovely and fundamentally
uninteresting Lily James as Cinderella is no match for
the venom exuded by Cate Blanchett’s evil stepmother. For
all its refinement, Cinderella drags when it should skip as
lightly as its title character when she’s late getting home
from the ball. š š 1/ 2 ( Reviewed by Ann Hornaday )
CHAPPIE
Polo Park, St. Vital, Towne. 14A. 121 minutes.
A robot ( played in motion- capture mode by Sharlto Copley)
is stolen and reprogrammed to counter an oppressive
mechanized police force in this futuristic thriller costarring
Hugh Jackman and directed by Neill Blomkamp.
Wrongheaded in conception, eye- rolling in execution,
Chappie is a childish blend of the cute robot goofiness of
Short Circuit and the bloody- minded mayhem of RoboCop .
It never finds its sweet spot and never, for one moment,
works. š ( Reviewed by Roger Moore )
THE DIVERGENT SERIES: INSURGENT
Grant Park, Kildonan Place, McGillivray, McGillivray VIP, Polo
Park, Polo Park Imax, St. Vital, Towne. PG. 119 minutes.
The second instalment of the Divergent trilogy sees the
multi- faceted heroine Tris ( Shailene Woodley) attempting
to stem the dictatorial ambitions of Jeanine ( Kate Winslet)
while learning she herself holds an important key to
Jeanine’s machinations. If the first film built up some
goodwill for its concept, this followup squanders it with its
ridiculous, non- stop cycle of fight and flight. Coupled with
the recent penultimate chapter of The Hunger Games , fans
of the young- woman- vs.- dystopian- tyranny genre are in
for a serious case of middle- chapter fatigue. š š
FIFTY SHADES OF GREY
McGillivray. 18A. 126 minutes.
A student ( Dakota Johnson) investigates enigmatic
billionaire Christian Grey ( Jamie Dornan) and is seduced
into his kinky lifestyle in this adaptation of the potboiler
bestseller. Appropriately set in a big- business, corporate
milieu, the film has a ruthless obligation to deliver some
sado- masochistic thrills for no other reason than spanked
bottoms equals augmented bottom line. Think: Last Tango
in Paris as written by a Harlequin romance hack. š 1/ 2
FOCUS
Polo Park. 14A. 105 minutes.
A seasoned con artist ( Will Smith) takes a promising
newcomer ( Margot Robbie) under his wing to teach her
the tricks of the trade, only to get them both embroiled
in a risky scam involving a dangerous race- car magnate
( Rodrigo Santoro). Co- directors Glenn Ficarra and John
Requa give the proceedings the high gloss of a luxury- car
commercial in an effort to offset the film’s toxic levels
of avarice with some visual glamour. The assumption is
the combination of Smith’s charm and Robbie’s beauty
will somehow con the audience into getting onside with
characters who are, on a fundamental level, reprehensible
people. š š
GET HARD
Grant Park, Kildonan Place, McGillivray, Polo Park, St. Vital,
Towne. 14A. 101 minutes.
Will Ferrell plays an investment banker faced with hard
time at San Quentin when convicted of fraud. So he hires
his car- wash guy Darnell ( Kevin Hart) to prepare him for
life in prison, under the racist assumption Darnell has done
hard time in his past. While the comedy has offended a
few critics, it’s a modestly entertaining burlesque, adeptly
satirizing racism and, less successfully, homophobia.
Remember: All this is within the context of a movie that
invites us to laugh at the frequent display of Ferrell’s buttocks.

THE GUNMAN
Grant Park, Kildonan Place, Polo Park, St. Vital, Towne. 14A.
116 minutes.
A sniper ( Sean Penn) with a mercenary task force goes
into hiding after assassinating a minister for mines in the
Congo, only to have his past come back to haunt him eight
years later when he finds himself on a hit list. Directed by
Pierre Morel of the guilty- pleasure thriller Taken , this one
comes with a heavy layer of social consciousness courtesy
of Penn, resulting in a film that’s heavy on the guilt and
light on the pleasure. š š
HOME
Grant Park, Kildonan Place, McGillivray, Polo Park, St. Vital,
Towne. G. 94 minutes.
This animated comedy follows the adventures of a lonely
alien named Oh ( voiced by Jim Parsons) who finds himself
on Earth helping a young girl ( Rihanna) on a quest of her
own. The bright colour palette and bubble motifs are
appealing, but without the magic of superior animated
films, the candy colours start to have a numbing effect by
the end. Home has a good heart, and yet, much like Oh, its
valiant efforts to be fun just fizzle. š š 1/ 2
THE IMITATION GAME
Towne. PG. 115 minutes.
Benedict Cumberbatch gets his best screen role as Alan
Turing, the genius credited with breaking the German
Enigma code during the Second World War ( as well as
being the father of the computer), but who found himself
being harassed after the war due to his homosexuality.
The shocking story is told in a sombre but dramatically
devastating fashion by director Morten Tyldum. š š š š
IT FOLLOWS
Polo Park. 14A. 101 minutes.
Following a sexual encounter, a 19- year- old young woman
( Maika Monroe) finds herself being stalked by terrifying
apparitions none of her friends can see. Playing on the
horror cliché wherein virgins tend to be the ones spared by
the films’ featured maniacs, writer- director David Robert
Mitchell makes that implicit component explicit: killer as
sexually transmitted disease. It makes for an ambitious,
unsettling thriller featuring a supernatural nemesis of
many guises, all of which suggest the terrors of adulthood.

KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE
Kildonan Place, McGillivray, McGillivray VIP, Polo Park, St.
Vital. 14A. 129 minutes.
A street punk ( Taron Egerton) with formidable survival
skills comes under the wing of a suave secret agent ( Colin
Firth) recruiting just such a likely lad in an impending
battle with a crazed tech genius ( Samuel L. Jackson). Since
this comes from the director, screenwriter and graphicnovel
author who gave us Kick- Ass, expect some over- thetop
comic book violence and perverse wit, and not just
gently goosed Bond tropes. š š š 1/ 2
RUN ALL NIGHT
Polo Park, St. Vital, Towne. 14A. 115 minutes.
Liam Neeson plays Jimmy, a mobster whose loyalties shift
when his longtime friend and associate ( Ed Harris) puts
a hit out on Jimmy’s own son. Neeson and Harris deliver
considerable gravitas as friends- turned mortal enemies,
but their efforts are largely wasted. One’s heart should
ache a bit for this story of a father’s shot at redemption.
Instead, one’s head aches a bit from all the tech trickery
and a particularly percussive soundtrack. š š 1/ 2
THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL
Grant Park, McGillivray, Polo Park. PG. 123 minutes .
In this sequel to the 2011 hit, the elderly English residents
of a hotel in India experience various romantic upheavals
simultaneous to the upcoming nuptials of the hotel’s
ambitious owner Sonny ( Dev Patel), complicated by the
arrival of a mysterious American ( Richard Gere) with designs
on Sonny’s beautiful widowed mom ( Lillete Dubey)
Very much on par with the original, it’s representative
of a certain kind of old- fashioned, handsomely mounted
melodrama featuring an array of colourful characters,
well performed. As in the first film, when the going gets
a little too soapy or overly maudlin, the cast of mostly old
pros elevates the material with the sheer force of their
collective skill. š š š 1/ 2
’ 71
Grant Park. 18A. 101 minutes.
In 1971, a young British army recruit ( Jack O’Connell) finds
himself alone and the object of a manhunt in a Catholic
Nationalist district in Belfast. This grim, gripping film
has its action beats, but it’s a breed apart from the rote
Hollywood action film where there are clearly defined
portrayals between good guys and bad guys, between the
innocent and the guilty, and between attack and defence.
There are no such easy narrative fallbacks here. š š š š
THE SPONGEBOB MOVIE: SPONGE OUT OF WATER
Kildonan Place, Polo Park, St. Vital, Towne. G. 93 minutes.
Everyone’s favourite phylum Porifera travels to our earthly
domain to retrieve a secret recipe, a task that necessitates
his defeating a ruthless pirate called Burger- Beard
( Antonio Banderas) in this comedy based on the animated
series. If “ nautical nonsense” and SpongeBob’s fingernailson-
an- underwater- blackboard voice aren’t something you
wish, drop off the kiddies and give ’ em some cash. š š š

who is told she will be laid off unless she can convince a
majority of her fellow employees to give up a bonus so she
can keep her job. What follows is a weekend- long journey

WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS
Bandwidth. 14A. 86 Minutes.
Starring and directed by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi,
this mockumentary examines the lives of four flatmates
in Wellington, New Zealand, just trying to cope with
modern life like anybody else, except they’re immortal
vampires. The faux- documentary thing is so over, and the
vampire movie is so passé. But, weirdly, the tying together
of these two tired tropes yields a rich comic tapestry, off
the wall as it may be. š š š 1/ 2
