Neepawa socials raise
$ 15K for fire victims
A fundraising drive in Neepawa has
reached more than $ 15,000 for eight
people displaced by a fire last month.
Two benefit socials were held in the
town Saturday, and unofficial tallies
show at least $ 10,000 was raised. Ongoing
Salvation Army donations have
hit $ 5,000.
“ It was an ‘ oh wow’ night, it went off
without a hitch,” said Val Wilson, who
spearheaded the fundraising efforts.
“( It was) just an all- time great evening.”
People from Neepawa rallied together,
as well as residents from Minnedosa,
Gladstone, Carberry and Glenella,
among other communities in western
Manitoba.
The town’s Home Hardware store
was destroyed in a fire Feb. 25, which
also demolished the four apartments
above the store.
Wilson said the fire hit close to home
for her, because she lost her own home
to a fire back in 1983.
“ Our babysitters were at home, my
husband and I were working and they
actually saved our most precious belongings,
they took our kids out of the
house,” she said.
“ That was a long time ago, and it’s
just something you want to do at some
point in time… give back. We do what
needs to be done in a community.”

Water ban questioned
THREE years after Brandon city council
halted the sale of single- use bottled
water at city facilities, one councillor is
hoping to lift the ban.
Coun. Vanessa Hamilton cited health
concerns for the public as being behind
her move.
“ I understand the notion of being environmentally
responsible and promoting
our water because it is safe, but
when you’re removing a healthy choice,
and you’re not removing pop, then that
encourages… more consumption of unhealthy
choices,” Hamilton said.
The ban was first put before council
in 2010 by former councillor Stephen
Montague, then president of the Brandon
University Students’ Union.
The goal was to be more environmentally
friendly and promote Brandon’s
tap water.
The city passed a motion to ban the
sale and distribution of bottled water,
effective Jan. 1, 2012.
No single- use bottled water is to be
sold at any city- owned/ operated facility
unless under extraordinary situations
as deemed necessary by the city
manager.
Hamilton, who is a dietician, will
raise the issue at the next council meeting.
“ We drink too much sugar… a
bottle of pop has about 17 teaspoons of
sugar,” she said.
While it is ideal to take a water bottle
and fill it, Hamilton said people forget.
“ It’s OK to introduce new policies and
bylaws, but if something’s not working,
it needs to be looked at and readjusted,”
she said.
Coun. Jeff Harwood was a councillor
during the original discussions on the
ban. He said he is open to debating the
topic.
“ We have to be flexible,” he said.
“ Circumstances may have changed.”
